Field Trip to the REWE Logistics Center in Sottrum

Practical Insights into Modern Supply Chain Management in the Retail Sector

As part of the master's module “Applied Operations and Supply Chain Management” taught by Professor Matthias Klumpp (markstones Institute / Retail and Logistics Management Research Group, Department 7 of the University of Bremen), students visited the REWE Logistics Center in Sottrum on 26 May 2026. The field trip provided a comprehensive look at the day-to-day operations of a modern retail logistics center and reinforced the theoretical content of the module through hands-on experience on site.

During an in-depth tour of the warehouse and order-picking areas, the students gained an understanding of the complex processes involved in the supply of goods in the food retail sector. Among other topics, the organization of warehousing, modern order-picking procedures, and the management of goods flows within the logistics center were explained. The importance of efficient processes for the reliable supply of numerous REWE stores in Northern Germany was illustrated particularly clearly.

In addition to technical and organizational aspects, the discussion also focused on issues related to human resources management, digitalization, and sustainability in logistics. Employees at the site explained current challenges and developments in modern supply chain management and highlighted how innovative solutions contribute to the continuous optimization of logistics processes.

A particular added value of the field trip resulted from the subsequent support provided to the students for their module projects. Several employees at the REWE logistics center agreed to be interviewed as part of the participants’ practice-oriented case studies. In particular, Sarah Lemmermann, operations manager at the Sottrum site, worked alongside other colleagues to foster academic exchange and provided the students with valuable insights into operational decision-making and management processes.

The field trip highlights the successful collaboration between REWE Nord and the University of Bremen, including within the framework of the Retail Logistics & Innovation Lab’s research. Through the close integration of academia and practice, students have the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into current challenges and potential solutions in the retail and logistics sectors and to deepen their methodological skills using real-world case studies.
