On April 22, 2026, Professor Matthias Klumpp (Faculty 7 at the University of Bremen) welcomed two industry experts as guest speakers in the lecture “Value Creation Processes”: Gerd-Wilhelm Brüning, Head of Logistics at REWE Nord, and Sarah Lemmermann, Operations Manager of the Sottrum warehouse site near Bremen.
The guest lecture provided fascinating insights into the logistics structures and distribution strategy of REWE Nord, combined with explanations of the latest retail innovations in private-label products and omnichannel delivery solutions such as automated stores and pickup stations.
Using concrete figures and practical examples, the speakers demonstrated the importance of efficient logistics networks for supplying more than 1,200 delivery points across Northern Germany. For example, the construction of the new Henstedt-Ulzburg distribution center has more than doubled overall distribution capacity in recent years, thereby sustainably supporting the future growth of the REWE Group.
A central focus of the engaging practical insight into modern logistics management at REWE Nord was the company’s emphasis on flexibility, sustainability, and employee orientation. As a company that describes itself as a “social network for 100 years,” REWE consciously assumes significant social responsibility, particularly in relation to food production in cooperation with farmers and value chain partners.
Finally, the importance of cooperation with the university as a key partner in education, teaching, and research was highlighted. Joint studies, teaching content, and thesis projects were presented as examples of the extensive collaboration between REWE Nord and the University of Bremen, with the aim of encouraging more students to explore the exciting field of retail logistics.
