Book "Media Generation and Communitization" is published

ZeMKI member Prof. Dr. Andreas Hepp and his former colleagues Dr. Cindy Roitsch and Dr. Matthias Berg publish the final volume of their eight-year research project.

It is a widespread thesis that digital media are changing our community life and differentiating generations in the process. But is there really a TV, Facebook and Instagram generation? And do they live their communities completely differently? Matthias Berg, Andreas Hepp and Cindy Roitsch investigated this question in an eight-year project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The results are now available in the book "Mediengeneration und Vergemeinschaftung. Digital Media and the Transformation of Our Community Life."

This book breaks with simple concepts of media generation and community. It shows that we can only grasp media generations if we keep the entire repertoires of media in mind and the horizon of different communities. This approach opens up a new view of the different references to place and subject matter of community in different media generations. Based on a broad qualitative study, the book offers a completely new approach to how the profound mediatization of our society is related to the transformation of communicative networking and communitization.

Methodologically, the book is based on a complex empiricism: a total of 161 people from three different age groups were interviewed: young people between 16 and 30, middle-aged people between 31 and 59, and older people aged 59 and older. In addition to two- to three-hour interviews, innovative methods of visually documenting networks and collecting media diaries using a smart phone app were used (see for this software).
