With newspaper digitization and newspaper portals, a further and originally new world of transmission for newspapers is emerging alongside the conventional newspaper collections in archives and libraries and newspaper microfilming. In this context, a specific source criticism for dealing with digitized printed newspapers is repeatedly demanded. For the supply of digitized newspapers, especially of the 19th and 20th century in Germany, the article develops such a source criticism along the historical research process and discusses three question and problem dimensions of a source practice of digitized newspapers:
What is offered by digitized newspapers?
What is the nature of digitized newspapers as digital objects?
How are digitized newspapers made available in newspaper portals?
