Project “‘You Are Your History‘: Family Memory and Identity on Genealogy Platforms“ receives funding from the University of Bremen’s Central Research Development Fund (CRDF)

Throughout the three-year project Rieke Böhling will analyze how genealogical research is conducted online. The project is situated in Prof. Dr. Stefanie Averbeck-Lietz’s lab Communication History and Media Change.

Different genealogical platforms (for instance Ancestry.com or MyHeritage.com) provide users with the opportunity to research their family histories on their computers and smartphones. They offer vast amounts of digitized historical documents, DNA testing in combination with an evaluation of users’ ancestry, as well as a forum for connection and collaboration among users. The project will analyze how genealogical platforms shape and transform media practices related to family memory. It contributes knowledge on the impact of media platforms, technology and artificial intelligence on everyday life and media practices related to (family) memory and history.
