The lecture proposes a comparative approach to social media hate speech and political extremism online. Building on lessons learned from previous research carried out in conflict situations in East Africa, it examines the different kinds of communicative dynamics through which hateful messages were disseminated through social media forums and to what effect. The presentation suggests a new critical research approach aimed at understanding the changing communicative dynamics underpinning social media.
