Computational Communication and Democracy

The lab investigates how digital communication affects various aspects of democratic life, and on how the use of computational and data science methods offer entirely new ways for understanding this impact. The lab’s work is driven by both methodological and substantive questions. Methodologically, the lab focuses on the fast-advancing methods through which new types of digital information can be processed and repurposed for studying a variety of social and political phenomena, and the emerging issues related to conceptualisation, operationalisation, measurement and inference that accompany their investigation. Substantively, the lab’s research address different but interdependent substantive topics, including the evolution of digitally-enabled political participation and collective action organisation, the rise of digital citizenship and the normalization of incivility in online spaces.
