Microorganisms perform a wide variety of functions on Earth, from pickling vegetables to mining critical rare earth elements. As we settle space, so they can help us to achieve  a long-term human presence in space. I'll describe how we might do this and some visions for the exploration of Mars and beyond.

Prof. Charles Cockell is Professor of Astrobiology at the University of Edinburgh and Co-Director of the UK Centre for Astrobiology. His academic interests encompass life in extreme environments, the habitability of extraterrestrial environments and the exploration and settlement of space. He has previously worked at NASA Ames Research Centre (NRC Postdoctoral Fellowship) and the British Antarctic Survey. His work has taken him to both poles and many other extreme environments. He leads the Life Beyond program, which engages prisoners in the design of human settlements in space.

The seminar takes place every third Wednesday of the month at 13:30 CET/CEST online via zoom and consists of a 40-minute talk followed by a 40-minute discussion.
