Gaussoids are combinatorial structures that abstract conditional independence among normally distributed random variables, much like matroid theory does for linear independence. Starting from this prototype of an intriguing structure arising in applications, we present the field of algebraic statistics and highlight the importance of real algebra, computation and combinatorics for applications.
