On the similarity of cosmic structures

The Universe is filled with structures of vastly different scales: 
galaxies themselves span many orders of magnitude in mass and size; they agglomerate in galaxy groups and clusters; and they align along filaments tens of millions of lightyears long. Notwithstanding their vastly different sizes, gravitationally bound structures are internally very similar: for example, the radial profiles of their dominant, dark-matter density differ by scale, but not by shape. Why is this so, and what can we learn from this kind of universality? Does it depend on the nature of dark matter, details of the cosmological model, or of gravity theory? The talk will discuss approaches to these questions, present partial answers, and lead to conjectures about cosmic structures that remain to be tested.

Mikrofossilien zwischen Klippen und Mikroskop - Eine Forschungsreise an die Jurassic Coast von Dorset

Die Jurassic Coast in Dorset ist weltberühmt für ihre spektakulären Klippen und Fossilien. Gemeinsam mit Steve Etches und seinem Team vom “The Etches Collection – Museum of Jurassic Marine Life” sammelten wir 140 Gesteinsproben, um darin Mikrofossilien zu finden und zu analysieren. Der Vortrag wirft einen Blick hinter die Kulissen, die Planung und Durchführung der Forschungsreise, Bearbeitung des Materials und berichtet über erste Ergebnisse. Seit kurzem hängt unser Poster mit wesentlichen Mikrofossilien in der Etches Collection in Kimmeridge, siehe foraminifera.eu/kcf-poster.html.

From Data to Discovery: Autonomous Discovery and In-Depth Characterization of Novel Functional Materials

Presenter: Dr. rer. nat. Tim Kodalle, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, California

Abstract:

Recent advances in the fields of machine learning, automation and open-source databases opened up new opportunities in high-throughput materials discovery, synthesis and characterization. Additionally, advances in detector resolution and response times enabled in situ characterization of structural and optoelectronic properties with high time-resolution and accuracy. The combination of these developments opens up opportunities for accelerated screening and optimization of novel materials. Using three different model systems, this talk will show use cases of automated material synthesis platforms as well as high-throughput and synchrotron-based in situ characterization. Further, it will develop a roadmap to combining both approaches to develop tools and workflows for accelerated material discovery and understanding. A prototype of such an "materials discovery platform", which is able to screen large parameter spaces using robotic tools and machine learning approaches, will be discussed. The platform is set up to first identify the most promising material candidates and then use a combination of ML and targeted characterization to reveal structure-property relationships based on these samples.

Biographie:

Dr. Tim Kodalle is a physicist working at the Molecular Foundry and the Advanced Light Source, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, California. Prior to joining LBNL as a postdoctoral researcher in 2021, he completed his PhD at Martin Luther University Halle and at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin in Germany in 2020.

In his current role as Team Lead, Dr. Kodalle enables and conducts research at the intersection of physics, materials science, chemistry, and engineering. He leads research efforts on new materials for Li-ion batteries and photovoltaic materials, e.g. on Ni- and Co-free cathodes and on hybrid perovskite thin films. Additionally, he works on developing automated, closed-loop materials deposition tools and manages a collaborative User Program for multimodal in situ characterization between LBNL's two User Facilities.

Dual Use, Risk, and Responsibility in Physical Research

Physical research frequently produces knowledge and technologies with multiple potential applications, including both beneficial and harmful uses. The talk discusses these issues from a conceptual perspective and briefly situates them within broader questions at the interface of physics and philosophy. It examines how dual use and uncertainty arise within core scientific practices, such as model selection, parameterization, and standards of evidence. Using examples like climate modeling or energy technologies, the talk highlights how such practices are connected to assessments of risk and responsibility.

Dr. Katharina Bothe arbeitet am Deutschen Schifffahrtsmuseum, dem Leibniz-Institut für Maritime Geschichte in Bremerhaven und untersucht in ihrem Forschungsprojekt die Arbeitsverhältnisse, sozialen Dynamiken und Ungleichheitsstrukturen an Bord von Kreuzfahrtschiffen, mit Fokus auf Mobilität, Regulierung und die Perspektiven der Beschäftigten.
