MA International Relations: Global Governance and Social Theory

  • Buildings: University of Bremen and Jacobs University Bremen

The "MA International Relations: Global Governance and Social Theory" is offered jointly by Jacobs University Bremen and the University of Bremen.

The substantive focus of our MA program in International Relations (MAIR) is the analysis of politics beyond the nation state. This research topic is examined from a global governance and an international political sociology perspective, looking at enduring processes of globalization, internationalized conflict, and increasing cross-border activities. The emphasis on these two perspectives and the explicit integration of general social theoretical questions is a unique feature of the MAIR. Students participate in a small, relatively specialized, and academically rigorous, all English degree program.

The program is offered jointly by Jacobs University Bremen and the University of Bremen. Jacobs University was founded in 1999 as the first private international research university in Germany. The University of Bremen is a public institution and one of Germany’s youngest and most active research universities. Both universities have particularly strong positions in the field of international relations and political science. The study is thus linked to an attractive research environment. Continuation on the PhD track in Bremen is possible after completion of the MAIR program.

Suspension of in-class teaching

Due to the spread of coronavirus, Jacobs University and the University of Bremen have suspended all in-class teaching until at least 19 April 2020. Therefore, the MAIR spring term courses move online immediately.

MAIR students will receive further information by their instructors and the program coordinator. We do our best to provide high-quality teaching under these new circumstances that nobody did sign up for. Obviously, we cannot simply do the same things online that we would have done in class under normal conditions but health and safety come first.

We also acknowledge that other things might have higher priorities for our students right now including caring for friends and family and coping with the daily inflow of rather disturbing news. Thus, we do not expect everyone to be just as productive as they would in a normal term (which also holds for our instructors). However, as a learning community we will try our best to maintain insightful and inspiring discussions on world politics.

Please stay tuned and participate in the e-learning activities organized by your instructors as much as you can. But most importantly, stay healthy and safe! You can follow the coronavirus updates by the University of Bremen (including information on exams and theses) here and the respective updates by Jacobs University here. Moreover, important information by the public authorities in Bremen (including an emergency hotline) can be found here.
