The MAPEX Doctoral Qualification Programme supports doctoral candidates in acquring transversal skills and competenicies useful for future leading tasks inside and outside of academia.
In cooperation with Dr. Camilla Tossi (ZARM), we are providing a workshop on how to improve your higher education teaching skills.
Workshop Description:
A workshop that explores different aspects of teaching and learning at a university level, in order to improve one’s teaching skills in a class and in the laboratory, learn the basic lingo for developing a teaching portfolio, and understand the different learning processes of students from different cultures and backgrounds.
Possible Topics/Structure:
The history and science of learning: evolution of university teaching methods in the last two decades
How to structure course curricula, workloads and grading systems to maximise deep learning
Different methods, different topics and different teachers: find your pedagogical signature
Theories of cultural dimensions, and how they affect teaching and learning methods
Group work and discussion
Target Group:
Doctoral students, Postdocs, and anyone who either wishes to enter an academic career that requires writing a teaching statement, or expects to train someone, as pedagogical skills transfer very well. Even your own learning can benefit!
Workshop Instructor:
Camilla Tossi is a Postdoctoral researcher at the ZARM, the Center for Applied Space Technology and Microgravity. She received her doctorate from Aalto University (Finland), where she taught in three master-level courses in the Electrical Engineering department, received her MSc from the University of Pisa (Italy), and worked as a postdoc at the Italian Institute of Technology. Her specialty is the synthesis of semiconductor nanomaterials with applications to renewable energy harvesting, which she' is now researching in microgravity conditions. She favors multidisciplinary approaches to research, and during her doctorate she trained in pedagogy and inclusivity practices at Aalto University and at the Karolinska Institute (Sweden).
