Workshop: AI Tools for the Academic Workflow

Veranstaltungsort: LION building
Beginn: 13. Februar 2025, 09:00 Uhr
Ende: 14. Februar 2025, 13:00 Uhr

This workshop is part of the MAPEX Doctoral Qualification Programme. We aim to support and train doctoral candidates in acquiring transversal skills and developing useful competencies for future leading tasks inside and outside of academia.

Workshop Description:

This workshop provides a practical introduction to using artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic research, particularly tailored for material science researchers of the MAPEX community. As AI tools, including large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, are increasingly becoming integral to academic and research workflows, this workshop aims to explore their potential and risks. Participants will explore a variety of tools for research, data analysis, literature research, and writing support. The workshop will include hands-on sessions and tutorials to help participants apply AI tools to their own academic challenges in an informed and cautious manner.

Workshop Learning Goals:

Participants will learn how to incorporate AI tools into different stages of academic workflows, identify relevant tools for their research needs, and understand the opportunities and limitations of these technologies. By the end of the workshop, they will have gained practical experience in applying AI solutions to real academic or research problems and be equipped with critical insights into the ethical and legal considerations of AI use in academia.

Contents:

- Research tools: material databases, prediction tools (e.g., AlphaFold, material property prediction).

- Data analysis tools: unsupervised classification, neural networks, image recognition.

- Literature research tools: summarization and literature search using AI.

- Tools for writing: project and paper drafting, editing, and organization using LLMs.

- Ethical and legal framework: risks, author attribution, responsible AI usage in research.

Preliminary schedule:

Day 1 (13.02.2025) / 9:00 - 13:00

- Introduction: overview of AI in academia with a focus on material science.

- Research tools: introduction to material databases (e.g., Materials Project), property prediction tools (e.g., AlphaFold, computational material property prediction), and workflows for identifying relevant data for research purposes, hands-on demonstrations.

- Data analysis tools: overview of practical applications featuring unsupervised classification methods, neural networks for material property analysis, and image recognition techniques for processing experimental data.

Day 2 (14.02.2025) / 9:00 - 13:00

- Writing tools: using AI for project and paper drafting, editing, organization, and literature research, including summarization and discovery using advanced LLMs.

- Practical tutorial: apply AI tools to a chosen research or academic problem.

- Ethical and legal considerations: Discussion of risks, limitations, and responsible use.

Target Group:

Open to researchers of all status groups within MAPEX, including PhD candidates, post-docs, and professors. It is designed to engage both experimental and simulation researchers, with content tailored to the material science community.

Practical Information:

Participants should bring a laptop with internet access to follow along with tool demonstrations and participate in practical sessions. No prior experience with AI tools is required, but familiarity with basic research workflows in material science is recommended. Participants are encouraged to come prepared with an academic or research challenge in which they think AI could play a role, as this will form the basis of some practical exercises.

Workshop Instructor:

The workshop will be led by Dr. Massimo Delle Piane, assistant professor at Politecnico di Torino (Italy), specialized in computational physics and chemistry. He has extensive experience in leveraging computational tools, including AI, to advance his research workflow, with a focus on material science and simulation.

Date/Location:
