MAPEX Symposium 2021: 29 - 30 September 2021

This online workshop aims at bringing together expertise on alternative sources, techniques and materials for radiative energy conversion beyond conventional solar cells. It addresses a wide range of applications including space technologies, radiation therapy, clean energy generation and more.

MAPEX workshop & user meeting - 3D Materials Analytics

Developed within the investigation area “3D Materials Analytics” of the MAPEX-CF, this meeting aims to connect researchers active or interested in the fields of x-ray microscopy and x-ray computed tomography.

From biology and geosciences to materials science, scientists from the University of Bremen and external institutions will share their research with a multidisciplinary audience.

Be there and benefit from the expertise and instrumentation present on campus.

The workshop will comprise

• An introductory lecture about x-ray microscopy and x-ray computed tomography;
• Invited talks by experts of different research fields;
• Round table discussions;

Aims and scope

Studies of 3D bulk materials microstructures can be pivotal for the future development of sustainable materials and to the understanding of biological materials towards bio-inspired goals.

In this sense, x-ray microscopy and x-ray computed tomography surge as viable options to tackle the open questions in the scientific community.

By promoting the exchange between present and future interested researchers with the expertise of MAPEX and MAPEX-CF we intent to further develop and solidify the field of 3D materials analytics at the University of Bremen.

Format

The workshop will be in a fully virtual format using the platform gather.town. In the workshop space, you will be able to use your personal avatar to:

Final program

Scientific equipment and methods often act as a nucleus for cooperative projects. The MAPEX Methods Workshops offer a platform for information and exchange on the scientific equipment and expertise available within the MAPEX community.

We will provide the audience with an overview about the expertise in the fields of computational and experimental fluid dynamics, available within the MAPEX community. The contributions will be comprehensive overviews in a lecture style with focus on the description of methods and application examples from research.

Two poster sessions will allow for deeper discussions of recent research projects.

Developed within the investigation areas ‘Spectroscopy” and “X-ray Diffraction”, the workshop intents to connect researchers working on the topic “Functional Oxides”, and provide different perspectives ranging from synthesis and characterization to the applications of such materials.

In this workshop, scientists from different research institutions will share their research with a multidisciplinary audience. The event will offer:

• An overview lecture about investigations of model catalysts
• Invited talks by experts from different research fields
• Guided visits through the laboratories present at the University of Bremen/MAPEX-CF

Aims and scope

A large variety of oxides can be considered functional materials, while their vast potential applications can have a profound impact on society. The workshop will cover hot topics such as

• Synthesis of nanoparticle oxides
• Thin-film and single-crystal growth
• Structure-property relationships
• Advanced characterization techniques
• Theoretical and experimental combined approaches for structure determination

Format

The workshop will take place in person at the University of Bremen campus. Participants will also be able to follow the talks via Zoom. A social gathering will close the first day of the event while on the second day a guided laboratory tour will take place, where the participants will be able to see the state-of-the-art instrumentation available at the MAPEX-CF.

In one of the sessions we will specifically focus on aspects of setting starting a company and successfully implementing business ideas that originated in academic research.

We will also offer talks and keynotes by Early Career and Principle Investigators, who will present their research and personal career path within and outside the academia. In between the sessions, there will be plenty of opportunities to get in personal touch and discussion with the speakers, panellists and peers.

Forschungsdepot des Deutschen Schifffahrtsmuseums (DSM) /Leibniz-Institut für Maritime Geschichte, Bremerhaven | Haus der Wissenschaft, Bremen.

Gemeinsam mit dem Center for Materials and Processes (MAPEX) sowie dem Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM) veranstaltet das Deutsche Schifffahrtsmuseums (DSM) / Leibniz-Institut für Maritime Geschichte am 15. und 16. Juni 2023 im Forschungsdepot des DSM in Bremerhaven und im Haus der Wissenschaft in Bremen die Tagung „Wissen durch Digitalisate? – Objekte, Bilder, Perspektiven“. Die Beteiligten des SAW-Transferforschungsprojektes „Digital Materialities“ diskutieren mit Gästen aus Wissenschaft und Kultur zur ästhetischen Dimension von Digitalisaten, ihrer Evidenzfunktion und ihren Barrieren.

Digitalisate von Objekten sollen die eigentlichen Exponate durch eine ‚Sichtbarmachung‘ vorher verborgener Spuren besser als je zuvor ‚zum Sprechen‘ bringen und durch ihre unbeschränkte Verfügbarkeit im Netz einen weltweiten Wissensaustausch fördern. In der zweitägigen Tagung am 15. und 16. Juni beleuchten wir, färben ein, vergrößern, schauen uns Details an und kommentieren.

Welche Materialitäten werden im Digitalisat produziert? Ist das Digitalisat nicht ein eigenständiges Artefakt und daher vom Digitalisierten losgelöst? Könnte es ohne Abstand – sei es im Sinne einer Abstraktion oder einer Konkretion –einen epistemischen Wert erlangen? Welche intrinsischen Störungen und Fehler treten in Digitalisierungsprozessen auf – Störungen, deren Analyse wiederum große Erkenntnispotenziale erschließen kann.

Digitalen Bildern kommt heute eine grundlegende heuristische Funktion zu – in der Industrie, der Medizin, in den Naturwissenschaften und in Museen und Ausstellungen: Aus ihnen werden Informationen abgeleitet, die in zunehmendem Maße nicht mehr empirisch mit dem originären Objekt abgeglichen werden (können). 

Noch zu selten wird dabei reflektiert, wie sich Medientechniken in die virtuellen Objekte einschreiben. Denn unterschiedliche Digitalisierungsmethoden sind nicht einfach Verlängerungen unserer Sinne, sondern operieren mit medientechnischen Eigenlogiken, welche teils ganz ‚unmenschliche‘ sensorische Daten erzeugen und somit erst wieder für uns ‚übersetzt‘ werden müssen. Sie implizieren (in zweifachem Sinne) ‚programmatische‘ Entscheidungen, welche die Repräsentation von Artefakten beeinflussen und unsere Perspektiven darauf nahe-, wenn nicht gar festlegen. Damit lenken sie auch die Art und Weise der Wissensproduktion.

Nicht zuletzt ist sowohl in musealen wie auch in wissenschaftlichen oder industriellen Kontexten zu fragen, wie Digitalisate und analoge Gegenstände miteinander funktionieren, interagieren und welche Konflikte auftreten können? Wie beeinflussen dabei Räume, Situationen und Alltagspraktiken die Wahrnehmung der Digitalisate?

Die Fachtagung, die sich an Expert:innen aus Wirtschaft, Kultur und Wissenschaft richtet, widmet sich diesen Themen sowohl in übergreifender Perspektive als auch anhand spezifischer Fallbeispiele aus musealen und industriellen Anwendungsbereichen. Dabei bringt sie Theorie und Praxis unterschiedlicher disziplinärer Fachrichtungen in einen engen Austausch.

Join us for a workshop on Diffraction! This event aims to foster connections among researchers who are involved in characterizing or aspiring to characterize the crystal structure and the atomic arrangement of their materials and compounds. In a condensed format, the workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of diffraction experiments and advanced structural characterization methods available at the University of Bremen and accessible large-scale facilities.

Aims and scope

Designed for early career researchers, this workshop caters to individuals who may not currently work with diffraction but envision utilizing this technique in future material characterization experiments. Key topics covered include:

Workshop Overview:

In the workshop we’ll cover various creativity techniques and guide you through a full design thinking cycle. You’ll work hands-on in small teams under time pressure on a fictitious problem. Design thinking is a practical and creative problem solving and innovation approach. It involves a human-centric, non-linear, iterative process that is especially useful to tackle complex or ill-defined problems. If you have little to no experience with design thinking and are interested to learn more, this is the right workshop for you!

Workshop Overview:

A science slam is a specific and popular communication format for early career researchers who want to present their research in short, comprehensible and entertaining ways in front of a large and heterogeneous public. It represents a perfect platform and opportunity to practise and enhance your science communication skills early on in your academic career. The workshop will provide you with the necessary tools and know-how to be successful in this respect. Furthermore you will also get the opportunity to actively participate at a science slam event taking place on 7th of May at Schlachthof in Bremen.

Publications are the currency of the research enterprise, but what happens after you click submit to a journal is often a black box. The goal of this session is to illuminate what happens behind the scenes in publishing, with a specific focus on publishing at Nature Energy. As handling editor for the social sciences at Nature Energy, Silvana Lakeman will provide an overview of the process. The session will cover journal selection and the differences between various Nature outlets, and the editorial process – from initial submission to final publication. This includes how to overcome common hurdles in ensuring your paper is catching the attention of editors and reviewers for the right reasons, and examples of successful papers. Any and all questions on this topic, as well as on the Editorial career track, are welcome.

In-situ refers to measurements performed under conditions that match the actual environment of the system, without removing or significantly altering it. In-operando and in-process describes experiments in which a system is analyzed under real working conditions, while it is actively functioning. Often such studies are found at the borders of the disciplines, providing an important impact on fostering interdisciplinary work among these. 

This workshop brings together experts and young scientists and will cover both, an introduction into the methodology as well as insights into recent results.
