Bremen Early-Career Electrochemistry Meeting

Beginn: 20. Juli 2026, 09:00 Uhr
Ende: 20. Juli 2026, 13:30 Uhr

Venue: Cartesium (Enrique-Schmidt-Straße 5)

Workshop Description

Join us for a half-day workshop on electrochemistry, bringing together early-career researchers from across Bremen's institutes for networking and sharing of research topics. We are building a community of early-career researchers for mutual support on practical and theoretical electrochemistry research.

Workshop Learning Goals

  • Gain a solid introduction to the fundamentals of electrochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, and experimental methods, at doctoral level and across different scientific backgrounds.
  • Discover research topics in electrochemistry currently pursued at Bremen institutes and research groups.
  • Expand your professional network across disciplines and institutions within the Bremen Technology Park.
  • For master's students: explore PhD opportunities and research topics available within MAPEX departments.

Program

09:00Opening — Prof. Lucio Colombi Ciacchi: introduction to the workshop and the new master course in Electrochemical Engineering
09:15Lecture — Prof. Fabio La Mantia: “Potentials, reactions and currents (thermodynamics, stoichiometry, definitions)”
09:45Poster session and networking
10:45Lecture— Dr. Camilla Tossi: “Electrode-electrolyte interfaces and the behaviour of electrical charges in (semi)conductors”
11:15Poster session and networking
12:30Open lunch at the Mensa (at your own expense)

Target Group

Doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and master's students at the University of Bremen and research institutes of the Technology Park who work with electrochemical methods. Participants from all backgrounds (chemistry, physics, engineering, and biology) are welcomed.

Practical Information

The poster session is intentionally informal: a friendly space for new PhD students to present their work and for groups to showcase their research.

The participation to the event is possible even without a poster, but we encourage everyone to bring one (new or already used) about scientific results, or general research topic, as well as future projects. We cover the printing of new poster submitted before the 12th of July. The format must be a PDF in A0 size, sent via email to Lena Ehlers (lehlers@uni-bremen.de).

Speakers

Prof. Fabio La Mantia is a Full Professor at the University of Bremen (Faculty of Production Engineering) and affiliated with Fraunhofer IFAM, where he leads the research group on Energy Storage and Energy Conversion Systems. He received his Ph.D. in 2008 from ETH Zürich, working on the operando investigation of lithium-ion batteries, and subsequently held a postdoctoral position at Stanford University. His research spans applied and fundamental electrochemistry, including aqueous batteries, electrochemical ion pumping, dynamic impedance spectroscopy, and electron- and ion-transfer at the interface. At this workshop, he will deliver a lecture on the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical reactions.

Dr. Camilla Tossi is a researcher at ZARM (Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity) at the University of Bremen. Her work focuses on nanotechnology, photo-electrochemistry, and 2D materials, with applications spanning microgravity environments. Her research at ZARM investigates photoelectrochemical energy conversion, with a focus on the transformation of water and CO₂ into oxygen, hydrogen, and valuable carbon compounds using sunlight; work with relevance both to space exploration and the terrestrial energy transition. At this workshop, she will deliver a lecture on the behaviour of interfaces between electrolyte and conducting or semiconducting electrodes, including applications in photo-electrochemistry.
