Data Train Curriculum

Cross-discipline basic competences in research data management and data science

The 3 Data Train Tracks

Which track fits to me?

Code text

In the "Starter Track", thematic overview lectures will provide a general knowledge of important topics in data literacy, research data management, and data science. This track is intended for anyone who wants to get started in research data management and data science.

This track is open to all interested in improving their data skills.

Data steward skills for researchers.
Data steward skills for researchers.

Data stewardship describes the using, documenting, managing, preprocessing, and harmonizing of data in compliance with legal and ethical obligations. In the Operator Track Data Steward essential competencies for the efficient handling of data in accordance with the “FAIR data principles” (which state that data should be findable, accessible, interoperable andreusable; see Wilkinson et al. 20161) are taught. FAIR data form the basis for sustainable and future-oriented research that exploits its potentials. The track includes hands-on workshops on programming languages, versioning, data management plans, reproducibility, data preparation, data provisioning, and database skills.

Data science skills.
Data science skills.

Data science is concerned with extracting information and gaining knowledge from data using computational analysis methods such as statistical techniques, but also artificial intelligence (e.g. machine learning).

In the Operator Track ‘Data Scientist’ participants learn methods from mathematics, statistics, artificial intelligence and computer science for data analysis as well as data visualization skills. In hands-on workshops, you apply data analysis methods, learn procedures for evaluating these methods, and gain knowledge in visualization techniques and principles.

Registration instructions:

Courses are allocated to tracks and build on one another. Doctoral researchers can complete the tracks in their entirety or just take individual courses.

The program is primarily offered to doctoral researchers from member institutions of the U Bremen Research Alliance. For online-lectures and in case that places are available, courses are open for other status groups or externals. Please note your status as one of the following in the registration form:

  • Doctoral researcher of a member institution of the U Bremen Research Alliance.
  • Doctoral researcher of a non-member institution. (External)
  • Post-doctoral researcher of a member institution of the U Bremen Research Alliance
  • Post-doctoral researcher of a non-member institution. (External)
  • Other

After registration, you will receive a confirmation email with information on participation. In case a course is fully booked, you will be automatically placed on the waiting list. The order of the waiting list is based on the time of registration and your status. In case of cancellation by a registered participant, the place will go to the first person on the waiting list.

Confirmation of participation

We confirm your attendance at (a) course(s) after a track was completed. All participated courses (of that track) are listed in the document.

Who receives a certificate?

  • Starter Track: Docotoral researchers affiliated at the U Bremen Research Alliance
  • Data Steward & Data Scientist Track: All regular participants (viewers excluded) who fully attended the workshop

Lectures in 2022 are completed. Next Starter Track will be in 2023 (Jan - May).

Open online lectures

Basic competences for research data management and data science.

The online lectures are open for all status groups.

STARTER TRACK PROGRAM 2022

Workshops take place between June - Oct. 2022

Hands-on workshops focussing on data steward skills for scientists.

Registration started on 28 April 2022.

Next Data Scientist Track between June - Dec. 2023

Hands-on workshops focussing on data science skills.

Please note: The Operator Tracks are currently planned to be almost exclusively in-person. To avoid Covid-related cancellations, we have decided to move the upcoming Data Scientist Track into 2023 and to  establish a stretched schedule for the entire curriculum. Moreover, we will work on a new Data Train website and a program-owned event management system.

The Data Train program will continue with the three tracks (Starter Track - Operator Track Data Steward - Operator Track Data Scientist) in the coming years, just with a stretched schedule and an innovative web platform. The Starter Track will continue to take place in the first half of each year and in the second half of the year the two Operator Tracks will alternate.
