(AKAD30) Arthur Miller's Dramas „Death of a Salesman“ and „The Crucible“

In this course, we will read and discuss two dramas by Arthur Miller, one of the most important 20th-century American dramatists.

Death of a Salesman premiered on Broadway in 1949 and earned Miller multiple awards, including the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This tragedy raises timeless questions about the meaning of success, the value of work, and the attainability of the American dream.

The Crucible premiered on Broadway in 1953 and won the Tony Award for Best Play. Dramatizing the Salem witch trials of the 1690s, this tragedy is strongly associated with Miller's experiences in the 1950s with the House Un-American Activities Committee's “witch hunt” for Communists in the US.

In diesem Kurs werden wir zwei Dramen von Arthur Miller lesen und besprechen. Miller gilt als einer der wichtigsten amerikanischen Dramatiker des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Death of a Salesman (Tod eines Handlungsreisenden) hatte 1949 seine Premiere am Broadway und wurde mit mehreren Preisen gekrönt, unter anderen mit dem Tony Award für das beste Drama und dem Pulitzer Preis für Drama. Diese Tragödie erregt zeitlose Fragen zur Bedeutung vom Erfolg, zum Wert der Arbeit, und zur Erreichbarkeit des amerikanischen Traumes.

The Crucible (Hexenjagd) hatte 1953 seine Premiere am Broadway und wurde mit dem Tony Award für das beste Drama gekrönt. Diese Tragödie dramatisiert die Hexenprozesse in Salem in den 1690er Jahren und wird stark mit Millers Erfahrungen in den 1950er Jahren mit der “Hexenjagd” des House Un-American Activities Committees (Komitee für unamerikanische Umtriebe) gegen Kommunisten assoziiert.
