I. General Studies - Fachergänzende Studien des FB 08 (Sozialwissenschaften)

Die fachergänzenden Studien (General Studies) sind Bestandteil des wissenschaftlichen Studiums, die ca. 25 % des Bachelorstudiums umfassen. Dieser Bereich bietet Ihnen die Möglichkeit, über das Fachstudium hinaus, Veranstaltungen zu besuchen, die Ihren Interessen entsprechen. Zudem können Sie ein berufliches Profil bilden, indem Sie Fach- und Methodenkenntnisse anderer Fachrichtungen erwerben. Ihre persönliche Expertise kann Ihnen den Zugang zu einem Masterstudium oder den Berufseinstieg erleichtern. Außerdem können Sie die fachergänzenden Studien nutzen, um Ihre Fremdspachenkenntnisse auszubauen und zu vertiefen.

Die fachergänzenden Studien der zentralen Einrichtungen der Universität Bremen (Studierwerkstatt, International Office, Fremdsprachenzentrum, BRIDGE Existensgründungsinitiative der Hochschulen, eGeneral Studies, Career Center) sind im Veranstaltungsverzeichnis an oberster Stelle aufgeführt.

Die Bachelorstudiengänge des FB 08 (Sozialwissenschaften) legen in ihren Prüfungsordnungen fest, in welchem Umfang fachergänzende Studien (General Studies) im Wahl- und Wahlpflichtbereich anerkannt werden. Bitte lesen Sie Ihre Prüfungsordnung genau. Und beachten Sie den Studienplan Ihres Studiengangs.

Doch wie entscheiden Sie, welche fachergänzenden Studien für Sie richtig und sinnvoll sind? Woran orientieren Sie sich dabei?

Bevor Sie darüber nachdenken, sollten Sie sich folgende Fragen beantworten: Welche Ziele will ich im Studium und darüber hinaus erreichen? Wie kann ich die Anforderungen im Fachstudium erfolgreich bewaeltigen? Was will ich nach dem Studium beruflich machen? Wo möchte ich mich beruflich engagieren? Wie kann ich erkennen, was meine Stärken sind? Wie finde ich heraus, ob ich für meinen Traumberuf ausreichend qualifiziert bin? Was muss ich wissen, um ein anspruchsvolles Praktikum zu finden? Wie kann ich herausfinden, was in einem Praktikum von mir erwartet wird?

Wenn Sie sich ernsthaft mit diesen Fragen beschäftigen, werden Sie merken, dass Sie einen Lernprozess beginnen, den Sie selbst aktiv steuern. Sie übernehmen die Verantwortung für Ihre berufliche Zukunft. Sie sortieren das Studienangebot der Universität Bremen bzw. des FB 08 nach ihren eigenen Kriterien – zumindest für den Bereich fachergänzende Studien (General Studies).

08-27-GS-1	Introduction to R data analysis and visualization for geography and geosciences (in englischer Sprache) Einführung in die Datenverarbeitung und -visualisierung mit R in Geographie und Geowissenschaften Blockveranstaltung ECTS: 3 Termine: wöchentlich Di 10:00 - 12:00 GW2 B2760 (CIP-FB 8) (2 SWS) The lectures provide an introduction to the R programming language. The focus is on data processing and visualization with the following content: 1. Understand R language and navigate the RStudio software 2. R basics: manipulate different data structures: vectors, matrices, dataframes, lists; install code packages and use functions; manage the working directory and its environment 3. Data management: read in, edit, filter, merge and analyse data sets 4. Data visualization with most common graphs (scatterplot, boxplot, bar graph, time series plot); customize graph text and aesthetics. 5. Basic analyses: regression and ordination methods 6. Introduction to packages: ggplot, vegan, rioja. All content is accompanied by practical exercises (during the course and as homework). Lernziele/Kompetenzen: The lectures aim is to teach students basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with the R software so that they can develop a basic understanding for working with R and basic analyses for upcoming student tasks. 08-27-GS-3	Real World Labs for Sustainable Futures (in englischer Sprache) Blockveranstaltung ECTS: 3 The idea of actionable knowledge has become key for research that aims to support sustainability transformation. Such research needs to support equitable futures within planetary boundaries to generate synergies and generate innovative solutions between academic, societal and other knowledge systems. “Real World Labs” and kindred concepts such as “Living Labs” are an increasingly popular, inclusive and problem-focused approach to the collaborative and societally effective generation of knowledge. This block seminar explores the range of approaches and their specific features and their relevance and innovativeness in relation to different spatial, political and institutional contexts. There will be group work in relation to the implementation and operation of exemplary real world labs. Lernziele/Kompetenzen: 1) Understand and explain key concepts in sustainability research. 2) Identify and critically assess the features and relevance of Real World Lab type of approaches for key sustainability issues in the Global South 3) Elaborate suggestions for a Real World Lab in a specific context. 08-27-GS-4	Die grüne Stadt – Forschungen zu Stadtgrün im sozialen Kontext (in englischer Sprache) The green city - Research on Urban Greenery in its Social Context Seminar ECTS: 6 Termine: wöchentlich Mi 14:00 - 18:00 FVG M0160 (4 SWS) Forschungs- seminar mit Exkursionen (Bremen) Die LV besteht aus vier Komponenten: (1) Lektüre und Diskussion ausgewählter Arbeiten zum Thema Soziales Grün und Natur/Biodiversität in der Stadt; (2) gemeinsame Entwicklung von ein bis zwei Forschungsvorhaben im Rahmen des laufenden Forschungsprojekt zu „Bio-diverse Cities“ mit Bezug zu Gärten und Grünflächen im Stadtteil Gröpelingen; (3) Durchführung der Forschungen (Hauptteil der LV); und (4) Ausarbeitung und Darstellung der Ergebnisse (hier auch die – ggf. benotete - Prüfungsleistung). 08-27-GS-6	Geographies of Global Inequalities (in englischer Sprache) Geographien der globalen Ungleichheiten Seminar ECTS: 6 Termine: wöchentlich Di 10:00 - 12:00 FVG M0160 (2 SWS) The course examines the spatial dimensions of social, economic, and environmental inequalities across the globe. By drawing on interdisciplinary critical approaches, students will be able to identify the multifarious forms that inequality can take and develop an understanding on how and why social and spatial inequalities might have persisted over time. The themes discussed in this course are the following: inequalities and the labour market, racial and ethnic inequalities, environment inequality, segregation and neighbourhood, poverty and deprivation, as well as immigration and inequality. By the end of this course, students will be able to: • Critically assess the geographic dimensions of global inequalities and explain how inequality is unevenly reproduced across space. • Understand the difficulties in defining and measuring social and spatial inequalities and apply theoretical frameworks to contemporary issues related to social and economic disparities. • Demonstrate critical awareness of the ways to measure inequalities and deprivation and identify and review the types of data sources that can be used to explore social and spatial inequalities. • Critically consider policy developments/responses to problems of social and spatial inequalities. 08-29-W-50	Sociology meets Psychology: Theories and Practices of counselling in organisations (in englischer Sprache) [Soziologie trifft Psychologie: Theorien und Praxis der Beratung in Organisationen] Seminar ECTS: 6 Termine: zweiwöchentlich (Startwoche: 1) Di 16:00 - 19:30 SFG 0140 (2 SWS) Students of Sociology often chose for their internship and later occupation counseling: this training seminar offers insights into the theoretical basis, examples of use, and options for further training courses with regard to some typical counseling approaches. Research about sustainability concerns macro-, meso- and micro-phenomena. While politics and sociology focus foremost on the micro- and meso-level, this seminar situated between sociology and psychology allows an understand of counseling in support of acting social sustainably on the the meso- and micro-level of work and organisations. Subject matters of the training seminar are, after an introduction, selected approaches of communication and group-psychology, systemic counseling, non-directive counseling, supervision and intervision, and coaching. An interview with a counselor/practitioner in the spirit of explorative learning adds field exploration insights to the literature-based understanding gathered by student’s teams. In this training seminar, counseling approaches which can support actors in acting socially sustainably in organisations are explored. In an introductory workshop, the modus operandi and basic knowledge are conveyed. Based on that, student’s teams develop a workshop about one counseling approach so that it can be explored together with all participants. Theoretical as well as practical insights become tangible through the setting. Upfront reading, content from field explorations, short inputs and guided activities in small groups interlock beneficially. The lecturer provides literature, offers practice examples, counsels student’s teams in their preparations and gives differentiated feedback. Requirement: Willingness of active participation, reflection and interaction are important for participation in this training setting. The Module of Student’s Choice W5 is studied as a stand-alone seminar. It can be complemented with other seminars of the training-format “Sociology meets Psychology” by the lecturer. Recommended for 3rd semester Bachelor students before their internship and thesis, but explicitly open from the 1st semester. As far as capacity allows, open to Master and Erasmus students, and to students from other faculties: The training is limited to 20 participants. 2 SWS: Fortnightly, starting in the 2nd week of the term, Tuesdays 4-7 pm; 3 hours (s.t.). Throughout the semester, we will delve into two fundamental types of games: simultaneous move games and sequential move games. In the first part of the course, we will examine simultaneous move games, where players make decisions simultaneously, emphasizing concepts such as Nash equilibrium and strategic dominance. The second part will focus on sequential move games, introducing the complexities of decision-making in a dynamic environment, featuring topics like subgame perfect equilibrium and extensive form games. By the end of the course, students will not only have a deep understanding of the theoretical foundations of game theory but will also be equipped to apply these concepts to real-world scenarios, enhancing their analytical and strategic thinking skills.
