Blockveranstaltung
ECTS: Anerkennung empfohlen mit 1 CP

Einzeltermine:
Mi 05.02.25 10:00 - 16:00 Online
Mi 05.03.25 10:00 - 16:00 Online

As a graduate, how do I not only get a job, but also a job that suits me very well? How can I use social networks for my self-marketing? How do I build sustainable relationships during my studies so that I can quickly start my career afterwards?

As a possible answer to these questions, more and more students are using business networks as for example LinkedIn and XING to network with each other, find out about future employers and build relationships with them.

In this workshop you will learn how to continuously develop your presence in those business networks during your studies. Using the Life/Work Planning method according to Richard Nelson Bolles, you will practice how to establish offline contact with the employers of your choice and integrate them into your virtual network as LinkedIn and XING.

Find out how you can later use your profiles to start your career and then use them for your career or your own business. You can use simple means to improve your chances of getting started after your studies, get in touch with interesting people for internships or student-jobs and draw the attention of potential employers to you.

The complete event covers the two dates specified. In the time between the two appointments, you will have the opportunity to build up a small professional network using the coffee break method. In advance of the seminar, it would be great to create a profile on LinkedIn - you will receive feedback on this during our time together. The advantages of the German network XING also will be explained but you don’t need a XING-profile, when we start.

In addition to the well-known written applications, this technique greatly expands your chances of quickly finding a job that suits you well after completing your studies.

1 CP is recommended for the seminar including the homework between the two dates.

Registrations for February run from 28 November 2024 to Sunday, 12 January 2025 via elearning.uni-bremen.de (Event search / Search course catalog / Interdisciplinary study programs / Career Center under: Application and self-presentation).

The workshop will explain most of the features of online application using practical examples - and practical exercises (with feedback).

This includes self-presentations (e. g. LinkedIn), knowledge about strategic job search, the use of online job portals - but also other features of so called "robot recruitment", such as preselection tools or time-delayed video interviews.

• Successful use of digital selection and preselection tools
• Optimize your application documents for ATS
• ChatGPT: what can I use AI for - and how?
• Other online tools (virtual assessment, delayed video interview, etc. )

Goals:
You get to know different recruiting tools and know how to use them for your benefit.

Those who attend only one of the courses will receive relevant material and can continue to work actively with it.

Workshop II: „Future Skills – competences for your professional future“
Future Skills are often directly reduced to digital skills, which – as important as they are – only represent one side of the Future Skill coin.

In the context of a VUCA world, the focus of employers shifts from "what?" to a combination of "how?" and "why?". It is no longer the specialist knowledge that plays the main role, but methods and, above all, meaningful values and attitudes that are becoming increasingly important.

Complicated? No - because as a Student or PhD or PostDoc you automatically use and train a lot of that so called "next skills".

In the workshop you will discover which next skills you already use - and how you can convince others (e.g. employers) of your future-skills-profile.

Goals:
You identify all moments in your studies (or work as a researcher) where you use so called "future skills". You assess the relevance of these skills on the basis of job descriptions and can give connect job requirements with specific examples from your skill-profile.

You can assess how ‘fit for the future’ you are and develop meaningful evidence for the application process and/or your further development plans.

Registrations for February run from 28 November 2024 to Sunday, 12 January 2025 via https://elearning.uni-bremen.de/ (course search / search in the course catalog / interdisciplinary study programs / Career Center under application and self-presentation).

Those who attend only one of the courses will receive relevant material and can continue to work actively with it.

Workshop III: „Be self-confident in job interviews - how to convince others and negotiate your wishes“
There are no real "rules" for job interviews - it depends on the company or organization you have been applying at, and the person responsible for the recruiting.

Nevertheless some basic and overall preparation is helpful. This workshop will support you by:
• Optimizing your self-presentation for job interviews (and similar situations)
• Negotiating relevant parameters and conditions of a working contract
• Developing a strategy for answering questions (without using supposedly "best answers", because these are an invention of guidebook-authors)
• Adjusting to different interview settings (online and offline)

We will focus on your individual preparation for job interviews - related to your filed of work, your employer etc. You might change your perspective on interviews by receiving feedback and sharing your experience with other participants. This strengthens your own ability to act on your own.

Goals:
You gain self-confidence for your self-presentations (various settings) and develop convincing examples for proof (of your skills), derived from your profile.

So you can overcome communicative challenges of self-presentation in job interviews and better negotiate your contract.

Registrations for February run from 28 November 2024 to Sunday, 12 January 2025 via https://elearning.uni-bremen.de/ (course search / search in the course catalog / interdisciplinary study programs / Career Center under application and self-presentation).

In everyday (work) life we often use skills automatically, without being aware of it. People often do not remember here they learned these competencies or do not assess their skills – and therefor it is difficult for them to denominate them or describe their potential.

In a job (or for your time as a student) self-awareness and knowledge of one's own strengths are necessary in order to:
• shape your profile
• learn, what kind of work environment might be beneficial for you
• develop strategies for future plans
• negotiate conditions (for jobs etc)

In the joint workshop and in the individual preparation phase, we use biographical exercises, specific ability tools, a personality tool and a cooperative negotiation model.

There will be room for exchange and feedback.

Goals:
The participants
• know and assess their personal strengths
• are able to establish the connection between competences and events from their biography
• reflect their needs and dreams
• can communicate confidently

The idea of doing an internship abroad is, for many people, both exciting and overwhelming. Spending an extended period of time abroad sounds great, but where does one even begin to start planning? In this event, we’ll work on finding answers to these questions and more. We’ll discuss:
• The steps you’ll need to take to find and start your internship abroad
• A timeline for taking these steps
• Options for financial support
• General tips for your applications abroad
• Where and how you can get individualized support along the way

The primary audience of this event is students considering an internship abroad.

Professional negotiation is regarded as a basic competence in the job.

Content and topics:
In the workshop, students get to know the basics of this negotiation method and actively practice all phases in exercises:
• Harvard Getting to Yes (all five steps): reaching a "wise agreement"
• Harvard getting past No: dealing with conflicts and barriers in negotiations
• Planning tools for negotiations – "3D model"
• Negotiation and Communication: strategies for different situations

Goals:
Students are familiar with all steps of the Harvard Method and are able to use it actively in their own negotiations.

Blockveranstaltung

Einzeltermine:
Mo 17.03.25 14:00 - 18:30 Online

“Application could be so easy - if it weren’t for the cover letter and the CV . . . ” The help of AI just comes in handy!

But: can ChatGPT (and that like) really help in creating the cover letter?

ChatGPT was released in 2022, and since then AI-based chatbots and other applications have suddenly become socially acceptabl. ChatGPT can be helpful for creating some ideas for writing a cover letter, for example.

For CVs AI-supported generators are also available, useful for design and structure. Employers might use Applicant Tracking System (ATS), or parsing software to read CVs; this applicant management software makes a kind of pre-selection; the CV is often challenging for the software (some designs can be parsed well, others or badly.)

But: AI is only as good as its user - so you have to learn the right applications, make it easy for ATS to track you.

For participation: Participants should have the OpenAIapp of Chat GPT installed on their device!
Content and topics:
• Using ChatGPT for cover letters: options and limitations
• The answers are only as good as the questions: Focus on the prompts
• Optional: practical test of AI-Sources - participants have to bring a job advertisement
• AI-generated templates for CVs
• Features of ATS
• Tips and tricks for the ATS-friendly CV
• Identify keywords, analyze job advertisements
• Data Protection and Deep Learning Algorithms: Critical discourse on transparency in the web

The term "resilience" can be translated as "psychological resistance" or "mental strength". People who are very resilient do not bury their heads in the sand despite stressful life circumstances or failures. Resilience can be translated as an inner strength that helps us to remain capable of acting in stressful and demanding situations. It helps us to stay mentally healthy or to recover more quickly and easily.

In everyday working life, this means remaining calm despite ever-increasing complexity and higher demands.

Training content:
  • Resilience factors & background of the resilience concept
  • Analysing your own resilience
  • Recognising your own patterns, attitudes and beliefs
  • Learning methods: mindfulness, optimism, thought patterns & more

This seminar starts as an online workshop on the announced date. You will receive additional details on the event in advance by email via StudIP.
After signing up for the seminar on Stud.IP, please confirm your attendance by sending an email to stwk@uni-bremen.de (please mention your name, matriculation number and the name/number of this seminar in your mail).

In this three part online workshop, students will learn basic strategies and techniques for time- and self-management. While the workshop is open to anyone who is interested, it will be particularly useful for students currently working on larger projects (like a bachelor- or masterthesis). In the first section of our workshop, I will explain the importance of goal setting and I will introduce you to different planning tools (milestones, personal Kanban) and working techniques (timeblocking/timeboxing, Pomodoro technique). Afterwards, students will have the opportunity to first assess their present time management strategies and then they will create their own to do lists and schedules during the workshop. There will be plenty of room for students’ questions throughout the whole workshop.
Until the second part of the workshop, students will have the chance to experiment with the techniques they learned during the first session and find out what works best for them. In our second meeting, we will talk about our experiences with time management in the previous week before I will present strategies for avoiding distractions and procrastination and for maintaining a productive working attitude.
After the workshop, those students who want to receive 1 CP/ECTS for participation must write an additional piece of work, a weekly plan with comments, and a self-reflection on the entire seminar (1-2 pages).
Additionally, after the end of the seminar, all participants have the opportunity to make an individual consultation appointment with me either by telephone, e-mail or as a zoom meeting to clarify open questions about a current writing project and/or their struggles with time management.

If writing an academic paper feels daunting and lonely and you struggle to motivate yourself to start writing alone at home, this workshop is for you! This class provides a supportive environment for working on your own writing projects. We will meet on four consecutive afternoons to motivate each other and write together. Each session will start with a short update on where we are right now and what we are planning to do this afternoon, followed by an hour of uninterrupted writing time, and end with a discussion on what we achieved during the independent working phase. During the whole session, the instructor is available for writing advice and feedback. After the workshop, those students who want to receive 1 CP/ECTS for participation must write an additional piece of work, either an exposé (for a term paper) or an essay (a short, argumentative discussion of a scholarly research question) (approx. 3 pages) and a self-reflection on the entire seminar (1-2 pages).
Additionally, after the end of the seminar, all participants have the opportunity to make an individual consultation appointment with me either by telephone, e-mail or as a zoom meeting to clarify open questions about a current writing project.

This online workshop is designed to support students with editing and revising their term papers and/or bachelor/mastertheses. Students will get a concise overview of editing techniques that they can immediately apply to their current writing projects. We will talk about the common structures for term papers and practice streamlining your line of argumentation. You will also learn more about how to avoid plagiarism in their paper and get some practice in proofreading. At the center of this workshop are the students’ own writing projects that will be discussed in small groups. There will be plenty of room for individual questions throughout the whole workshop.

After the workshop, those students who want to receive 1 CP/ECTS for participation must hand in additional pieces of work: an outline for a term paper (approx. 3 pages) and a self-reflection on the entire seminar (1-2 pages).

Many seminars at German universities require their students to write term papers. However, what your lecturer here in Germany expects from you might be very different from what is common elsewhere.
In this online workshop, students will gain a basic understanding of academic writing for German universities. At the center of this seminar is the format of the Hausarbeit (term paper). After I have introduced you to the formal criteria of German term papers, all participants will learn how to develop own research questions, how to create an outline for your term paper and how to kick off the writing process. All participants have the opportunity to work on their own topics. For students who do not yet want to tackle a specific writing project, I will provide exercises that are more general. While the workshop is open to anyone who is interested, it is specifically tailored to the needs of international students. In the workshop, inputs from the lecturer alternate with interactive writing exercises and there will be plenty of room for individual questions.

The aim of this two part online workshop, is to prepare students to write their first own articles for publication in academic journals. While the workshop is open to anyone who is interested, it will be particularly useful for (master’s degree) students who are working on getting their research published. In the first section of our workshop, I will provide students with an overview of the academic publishing process: we will discuss how to find potential publication platforms, how to avoid predatory journals and gain an overview of the different kinds of academic journals that are out there. You will also learn more about the first steps of deciding on a journal and approaching editors.
Until the second part of the workshop, students have time to start writing their own article: together we will work on finding the most effective title for your article, writing a convincing abstract and creating a clear structure for your article. I will further provide advice on editing and proofreading and we will learn more about the peer review process.
After the workshop, those students who want to receive 1 CP/ECTS for participation must hand in an additional piece of work, either an outline for a journal article (3 pages) or a scholarly essay on a research topic of your choice (approx. 3 pages) and a self-reflection on the entire seminar (1-2 pages).

In this 2 part online workshop, students will gain a basic understanding of how to engage with secondary literature productively. This workshop is designed for students who are new to doing research – no previous experience is needed. In the first section of our workshop, I will explain what secondary literature is, why it is an essential component of academic writing and where to find it. Students will then have the opportunity to get started with their research activities during the workshop and there will be plenty of room for students’ questions.
For the second part of the workshop, students will bring along the secondary texts they found, as this section will teach them how to assess secondary texts concerning their credibility and usefulness for a specific research topic. Students will also learn how to write excerpts for secondary texts that will help them to get an overview of the state of research on their research topic. Eventually, I will introduce students to different ways of referencing secondary literature in their own texts (without resorting to plagiarism), followed by several interactive writing exercises.

Additionally, after the end of the seminar, all participants have the opportunity to make an individual consultation appointment with me either by telephone, e-mail or as a zoom meeting to clarify open questions.

Do 21.11.24 10:00 - 14:00 online
Do 12.12.24 10:00 - 14:00 online

Additionally, after the end of the seminar, all participants have the opportunity to make an individual consultation appointment with me either by telephone, e-mail or as a zoom meeting to clarify open questions about a current writing project.

Mi 30.10.24 10:00 - 17:00 online

Over the past two decades, VR has established itself as an important tool in several industries, such as manufacturing (e.g., automotive, airspace, ship building), architecture, and pharmaceutical industries. During the past few years, we have been witnessing the second "wave" of VR, this time in the consumer, in particular, in the entertainment markets.

Some of the topics to be covered (tentatively):
• Introduction, basic notions of VR, several example applications
• VR technologies: displays, tracking, input devices, scene graphs, game engines
• The human visual system and Stereo rendering
• Techniques for real-time rendering
• Fundamental immersive interaction techniques: fundamentals and principles, 3D navigation, user models, 3D selection, redirected walking, system control
• Complex immersive interaction techniques: world-in-miniature, action-at-a-distance, magic lens, etc.
• Particle systems
• Spring-mass systems
• Haptics and force feedback
• Collision detection
• Acoustic rendering
The assignments will be mostly practical ones, based on the cross-platform game engine Unreal. Participants will start developing with "visual programming", and later use C++ to solve the assignments.
You are encouraged to work on assignments in small teams.

Whether it is coping with ‘Peak Oil’, meeting the challenge of climate change, helping farmers in poorer countries through fair trade, or finding ways to keep discarded products out of the landfills, sustainability issues are the biggest challenges facing businesses. The course shows how the complexities of sustainability issues can be integrated into marketing. The systematic, step-by-step approach of sustainability marketing involves: an analysis of socio-ecological priorities to complement conventional consumer and market research; an integration of ethical values into marketing strategy; the development of sustainability marketing strategies; a new consumer-oriented sustainability marketing mix of the ‘4 Cs’ (Customer Solutions, Communications, Customer Cost, Convenience) to replace the outmoded and producer-oriented ‘4 Ps’; and finally an analysis how innovation and marketing can go beyond responding to social change to contribute to a transformation to a more sustainable society. The course is ideally suited to both students and practitioners at many different levels and disciplines, including marketing, innovation, CSR, sustainability and environmental management.

For you as a student application starts with awareness of your professional profile and knowledge, concerning options on the job market and application procedures.

As an international student you can use your international background as an advantage - by looking for employers that can use your specific language skills and your local expertise for their business in Germany.

As a student of the University of Bremen you can use the specifics of your field of studies to differentiate yourself from other applicants.

During the workshop we will
• analyze your professional profile (international background, expert skills gained by studies, relevant individual experience, core skills - but also wishes) with the goal, to use the outcomes for building a strategy for application
• provide relevant information concerning the job market in Germany - with the aim of building an expedient search strategy (where do I find interesting employers)
• create first ideas about how to bring together the highlights of your profile and the needs of employers for your application (written and verbal)

CC-42_05-02-WiSe24-25Successful with social media business-networks – how to build a network for your first job in Germany (in englischer Sprache)

A skills analysis and an active interview training exercise will deepen these application methods.

On this seminar day, we will also look at application documents such as CV, cover letter and the digital application process. Nowadays, companies want reflective applicants who know what skills they have. Especially in Germany, goal-oriented application documents are important.

People who are very resilient do not bury their heads in the sand despite stressful life circumstances or failures. It helps us to stay mentally healthy or to recover more quickly and easily.

In everyday working life, this means remaining calm despite ever-increasing complexity and higher demands.
