Pflichtveranstaltung für neue Studierende der Studienfächer mit laborpraktischen Inhalten die Sicherheitsschulung (in englischer Sprache) mit praktischer Feuerlöschübung stattfinden.
The safety training (in English) with practical fire-fighting exercises will take place as a compulsory event for new students of the study programmes with practical laboratory contents.

Parts of the exercise will be held as a seminar (dates and time slots upon agreement with the students).

For projects with cold atoms in space, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems are one of the key technology for a successful mission. These experiments are currently carried out in the drop tower and on sounding rockets and in the future on-board of the International Space Station (ISS) or on a satellite. In contrast to ground based experiments, these space based experiments need to withstand the mechanical loads during all phases of the mission, including the launch, the flight and the landing. In the framework of these missions, experimental tests and simulation based (FEM Simulations) approaches are currently under investigation.

The project includes the following tasks:

Experimental part
- Experimental investigation of UHV seals under mechanical loads
- Determination of material and engineering data
- Experimental investigation of pretension force of screw connections

Simulation Part
- Optimization of current FEM Model
o Mesh, material model, etc
- Verification of FEM model with experimental data
- Optimization of a post processing of the FEM simulation results
- Implementation of a automated post processing for a leakage prediction for future design optimizations

This project will continue the development of a universal tool to compute the supersonic ascent of sounding rockets using ANSYS CFX

- Follow up on current simulation status from previous group with literature review (previous tasks that should have been completed during submission of report)

- Guided User Interface Development with Database Infrastructure Implementation
i) Frontend program development for GUI (suggested programming language is Java due to existing framework with efficiency)
ii) Backend communication with ANSYS software using Python scripting
iii) Database infrastructure development using MYSQL or other current database systems

- Angle of attack on existing nose cone structures
i) Basic implementation of angle of attack in current existing model
ii)Check simulation limits (e.g. min/max angle) with respect to physical theory and obtained results
iii)Combination of two nose cones (Blunted and Ogive) that are available now in one simulation platform/set-up and implement angle of attack.
iv) Further meshing optimization/mesh import settings

- Improve coupling of CFD and thermal transient simulation
i) Develop further the 2nd Iteration cycle (or add extra iteration cycle depending on accuracy of simulation results) – couple back results into CFX and cross check results (continuation of progress from current student group)

- Ablative layer improvement
i) Improve and optimize the parameters that allow for better simulation results

- Investigation of CFX pre settings in order to optimize the simulation speed and results
i) Identify the important factors that affect simulation speed, stability and accuracy with the aim of optimization

This project involves conducting CFD simulations on the entire rocket body of Transcendence, across various flight regimes, altitudes and associated temperature and pressure settings. The performance of the rocket will be analyzed across different speeds: Subsonic (Mach 0-0.8), Transonic (Mach 0.8-1.2) and Supersonic (Mach 1.2-5) using Ansys Fluent solver.
Using CFD simulations, the following is to be examined:
1. Transcendence has a total drag impulse of less than 40 kN.
2. The centre of Pressure remains below the vehicle’s centre of mass through all Flight regimes.
3. The heat loads generated during ascent.
4. At the maximum dynamic pressure, Transcendence’s Fins generate a torque on the spacecraft such that a spin rate of 4 Hz is achieved.

Metallic glass (MG) is a non-crystalline material featuring the glass transition. This features outstanding strength but extremely limited plasticity. The synthesis of MGs usually requires high cooling rates, which can be readily achieved by laser powder based fusion (L-PBF). However, the formation of crystalline phase inside the glass matrix due to the thermal cycling during LPBF leads to a loss of their mechanical performance. In addition, high residual stresses provoke the formation of cracks leading to material failure. These phenomena require fundamental understanding. To provide an insight about the above-mentioned issues, this work will study the processing of a commercially available CuZr-based MG powder by L-PBF using simulation approach.
