09-M52-03-01Philosophy of Cosmology, Space and Space Travel [digital] (in englischer Sprache)

Seminar

Termine:
wöchentlich Do 14:00 - 16:00 (2 SWS)
wöchentlich Do 14:00 - 16:00

Course Content:

This course covers philosophical questions about cosmology and about the exploration of terra incognita related to space. First, we cover the meaning of exploration for mankind in general (exploration of new territories as well as of laws of the physical world and laws in general). Second, we specialize to questions related to space: What is the idea behind a finite or infinite world? What does the exploration of space mean for the “position” of mankind within the Universe, for the world view of human beings? What would it mean for mankind if the search for extraterrestrial life will be successful? In what sense can cosmology missions “uncover” the dynamics of the universe from the Big Bang to the far future? What concept of time is involved here and what counts as evidence and why?

Learning outcome/learning goals:

• Knowledge of basic notions from the philosophy of the natural sciences (natural law, space, time, infinity, …)
• Basic insights into the aims of scientific inquiry and the generation of scientific knowledge (by means of examples from the history of cosmology)
• Ideas involved in human self-understanding related to “other worlds” or extraterrestrial life
• Basic knowledge of cosmology.

04-M30-MP-2001Commissioning of a Payload for Student Experiments with Cold Atoms
Inbetriebnahme einer Nutzlast für studentische Experimente mit kalten Atomen

Projektplenum
ECTS: 12 (MSc PT 15)

At ZARM a payload for measuring accelerations using cold atoms was already integrated. During this project you will use this hardware to:
- Finalize the integration of the payload, apply minor changes to the setup if required
- Implementation of the control software of the payload
- Develop and implement an image analysis tool
- Design of optics for atom interferometry
- Commissioning of the experiment in order to trap atoms

04-M30-MP-2003Computation of the supersonic ascent of sounding rockets using ANSYS CFX and ICEM

Projektplenum
ECTS: 12

This project aims at creating a simulation environment to ease the simulation of the ascent of sounding rockets using CFD approaches. The simulation will be carried out using ANSYS CFX in combination with the ANSYS ICEM mesher. It shall allow to adapt the geometry of a sounding rocket without the necessity of setting up a new mesh in ICEM.

The objectives and your tasks in this project will be:

Read best practices for CFX and ICEM
Understand the Theory behind it
Make yourself familar with existing simulation setup for a blunted nosecone (MAIUS)
Use existing setup to make wall thickness variabel in ICEM, without needing to adapt meshing setup
Include Air in the interior
Compare to measurements in MAIUS
Make length, diameter and angle variable in ICEM without need of changing the ICEM setup significantly
Ausgabegrößen (Wandtemperatur, Staupunkt, Druck auf Struktur)

Optional: Second Setup for Ogive Nosecone
Optional: Include fins and motors
Optional: Include ablative coating in simulation
Optional: Allow Rotation and an Angle of attack > 0°

04-M30-MP-2004Development, construction and test of a 5000 N hybrid rocket engine
Entwicklung, Konstruktion und Test eines 5000 N Hybridraketentriebwerkes

Projektplenum
ECTS: 12

Within the AQUASONIC II project of Hochschule Bremen a hybrid rocket engine shall be developed for ground testing purpose and with regard to a flight model. The engine design is based on the requirements of the AQUASONIC II project and the experience of a 3000 N flight engine.

04-M30-MP-2005Development and test of a Nytrox (GOX enriched N2O) fueling system
Entwicklung und Test eines "Nytrox"-Treibstoffsystems (GOX/N2O)

Projektplenum
ECTS: 12

Within the AQUASONIC II project of Hochschule Bremen a redesigned fueling system shall be developed for ground testing purpose. The AQUASONIC II rocket is equipped with the propellant combination of PE/N2O and is limited in the amount of oxygen inside nitrous oxide. To increase the propulsion
system performance, nitrous oxide shall be enriched with gaseous oxygen.

Beside project management tasks, also simulation work is to be done. The main part of the project is presented by development and build of laboratory test setups and execution of tests therein.
