In this course we will explore how science and engineering can serve as a key tool to solve challenges in society. The focus will be on how from different fields (natural sciences, informatics, engineering, etc.) positive impacts can be achieved specially towards the challenges that climate change brings to humanity. The gender aspect will be central in the course, exploring different perspectives and approaches to develop gender-responsive solutions.
Basic insights on the Paris Agreement regarding the relation between climate change, technology and gender will be given as well.

One of the interfaces between medicine and computer science is the post-processing of clinical data using algorithms as well as the development of software programs for the planning and improvement of treatments. In this workshop we give insights into the tasks of a computer scientist in the digital medicine with special focus on image processing and software development.
Typical requirements in the field of image processing in clinical practice are the identification and measurement of tumor volumes in different organs and at different points in time during treatment. Beside the algorithmic functionality the usability of the developed software products plays a major role.

We will approach the topic from different perspectives and also examine different career pathways. We will do this by impulse talks concerning various topics in digital medicine, exercises in the interactive program "Inside Insight", and a demo of the image processing software MeVisLab.

Parametric feature-based 3D-models are the base for current CAD systems used in mechanical and civil engineering as well as in architecture and other disciplines. An example is FreeCAD, an OpenSource-CAD-application with functionality similar to commercial programs such as CATIA, SolidWorks or Solid Edge. In addition to the creation of models, FreeCAD also allows for analysis (e.g. FEM), simulation and rendering. It can be extended through scripts in Python or plugins in C++.

The participants will model a parametric object for 3D-printing together in small interdisciplinary groups. In the process, they get to know typical CAD functionality used in a practical example, and beyond that learn about the theoretical foundations of CAD-modelling, the various modelling paradigms and the underlying data models. They come to know how to use Python scripts in order to analyse CAD models and automate modelling tasks.

Finally we are going to prepare the model for 3D print.

If you want to be sure that your data stays with you, but you need some smart, customised system to water your plants, remind you and your flatmates to put the trash outside or you just want to control the lights within your home, the best solution is: DIY – do it yourself!
Also, this is a good chance to gain and enhance programming skills. We are going to use a Raspberry-Pi to run our own bots for the Messenger "Telegram", try to understand the pro- and cons of Telegram regarding data-securitiy, learn how to connect sensors to a Raspberry-Pi, and look at ways to monitor sensor data.

It is the science behind countless technological advancements like self-driving cars, speech recognition, effective web search, and a vastly improved understanding of the human genome. Moreover it gives us the tools to approach existing problems in a new way by learning from data and experience.
This course provides a practical introduction to machine learning, data mining, and statistical pattern recognition. Based on a real world problem you will learn how methods of supervised and unsupervised machine learning work, gain practice implementing them and getting them to work for yourself. More importantly you will also learn how to leverage machine learning techniques for problems and use cases you might encounter in your own work or field of study.

Deep learning is a class of artificial intelligence (AI) learning algorithms that centers around deep neutal networks. Also known as deep neural learning or deep neural network, it is the technology behind countless advances in artificial intelligence over the past years. Neural networks excel at supervised tasks such as image classification but are just as powerful when it comes to learning from unstructured and unlabeled data. 
This course builds on the module 'Introduction to Machine Learning' and provides a practical introduction to neural networks and deep learning. Knowing how learning algorithms work, you will get to know the basics behind neural networks and how they learn to predict complex concepts. Based on tangible practical exercises you will learn to implement, train and evaluate simple neural networks with the help of Python libraries (i.a. keras and tensorflow). Moreover the course will introduce you to various complex neural architectures like Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs).

According to statistics, the Android mobile operating system covers some 70% of the market, with an open-source community and dozens of job opportunities. The mobile operating system provides the ability to design own applications with the help of a provided software development kit.
In this course, you will learn about the Android operating system, its main building blocks, user-interface, in-built sensors, and some security tips.
In the practical session, you will learn how to build your own Android application and test it on an Android smartphone and on an emulator.
The course will focus on the latest Android version, using its features, and provide hands-on development on an Android platform. We do programming on Android, develop cool apps, and show our creativity.

This course offers a hands-on approach to programming in a matrix-based programming language.
Participants may chose whether to use Matlab or GNU Octave as a working environment, as the fundamental syntax is identical in both programming languages.

Programming in Matlab or Octave has several advantages widely recognized in academic and industrial fields of application.
The following aspects will be covered in the course:

• Matlab or Octave as high-level programming languages are easy-to-use thanks to an interactive programming environment (allowing for both command-line and GUI-based programming).
• Fundamental aspects of programming, including the use of scripts, functions, control structures,.., but also the "traps" to be considered when using a numeric approach to problem solving will be discussed.
• Matlab or Octave are "MATrix LABoratories", where performing mathematical operations is easy when the concept of matrix calculations is applied. You will learn how to use this for the efficient analysis of data and how to avoid writing long code.
• Solutions for almost any mathematical problem are available as functions and can be customized for individual use. In this introductory course, one focus is to properly use such functions based on examples and explanations provided in the software documentation.
• There is a variety of options to analyze and visualize data, which will be introduced in order to obtain a template to be used in one's proper study or research project.

The course will combine seminaristic online classes - which leave enough time for coding introductory examples together with the lecturer - with practical sessions, where the aspects above can be applied in exercises and small application projects.
Feedback sessions will allow to answer individual questions, e.g. on the analysis of one's proper data set or the use of specific toolboxes.

In this class, we will study the politics of human and fundamental rights in the global governance of digital tech – this year with a particular emphasis on governing artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a key technology that affects how we live, work, understand the world, even conduct our public affairs (think of judges relying on algorithms to decide about keeping defendants in jail or facial recognition technology that can identify people with 'dangerous' feelings). This seminar will prepare you to analyze ongoing developments in AI and its governance from a political science perspective, while also touching on neighboring disciplines like law and communications.

This class will be conducted in close collaboration with partners at other European universities: Lecturers and students from Maastricht University (YUFE, YERUN), University of Padova, the University of Salerno and Dublin City University (YERUN) will join us in several of our meetings. Together with these partners, we examine how AI can be globally governed for the realization of human rights in the digital age. This class allows you to catch up on AI as a technology through an integrated digital learning module, making it suitable for any level of prior tech knowledge.

This class will be taught remotely through weekly meetings on Zoom. Options for examination include presentations, blog posts and term papers.

Whether it is coping with ‘Peak Oil’, meeting the challenge of climate change, helping farmers in poorer countries through fair trade, or finding ways to keep discarded products out of the landfills, sustainability issues are the biggest challenges facing businesses. The course shows how the complexities of sustainability issues can be integrated into marketing. The systematic, step-by-step approach of sustainability marketing involves: an analysis of socio-ecological priorities to complement conventional consumer and market research; an integration of ethical values into marketing strategy; the development of sustainability marketing strategies; a new consumer-oriented sustainability marketing mix of the ‘4 Cs’ (Customer Solutions, Communications, Customer Cost, Convenience) to replace the outmoded and producer-oriented ‘4 Ps’; and finally an analysis how innovation and marketing can go beyond responding to social change to contribute to a transformation to a more sustainable society. The course is ideally suited to both students and practitioners at many different levels and disciplines, including marketing, innovation, CSR, sustainability and environmental management.

The lecture “World in Transition” is offered by members of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). The WBGU is an independent, scientific advisory body to the German federal government. Its principal tasks are to analyse global environment and development problems and to elaborate recommendations for action and research. In this lecture, the WBGU presents its flagship report “World in Transition – A Social Contract for Sustainability”. The lecture starts with an interview providing a comprehensive overview of the global transformation towards a low-carbon society. Subsequent lectures highlight the characteristics of the so-called »anthropocene«, including the main impacts of climate change. A detailed view on concepts of transformation is presented and aspects of technical and economic feasibility are adressed in detail. The role of the state and change agents in the transformation process are also examined. Finally, you will become familiar with some instruments and measures that can advance the great transformation towards sustainability. A special lecture focuses on the role of scientific advice in policy making and explains the functioning of the WBGU and how it produces scientific policy advice.

In dem Interkulturellen Training lernen die Teilnehmer/innen Methoden, Übungen und Theorien kennen, die ihnen interkulturelle Kommunikation erleichtert und sie für kulturelle Konfliktsituationen sensibilisieren.
Das Seminar richtet sich an alle Studierenden (national/international) der Universität Bremen und wird in englischer Sprache abgehalten.

Lernziele der Schulung sind:
Die angehenden TutorInnen werden auf die Rolle als AnleiterInnen von Lerngruppen mit einer Einführung in die Didaktik und die Grundlagen des effektiven Lernens vorbereitet. Sie erfahren, wie man das Verstehen von Inhalten oder Problemlösungen beim Lernen als Lehrender mit Methoden effizient unterstützen kann, welche sozialen Kompetenzen für die Leitung eines Tutoriums erforderlich sind wie man diese in der konkrete Lehrsituationen umsetzen kann (z.B. richtige Gesprächsführung bei schwierigen Lehr-Lernsituationen).

Folgende Inhalte werden mit unterschiedlichen Methoden vermittelt:
• Grundlagen zum Lernen und Lehren: Kurze Einführung in wesentliche Inhalte zum Lernen und Lehren, der richtige Einsatz von unterschiedlichen Medien und Methoden in einem gut strukturierten Lehrveranstaltungsablauf sowie Motivierung in der Lerngruppenarbeit etc.
• Gesprächstechniken, angemessener Umgang mit schwierigen Situationen im Tutorium, Feedbackmethoden.
• In Simulationen von konkreten Lehrveranstaltungen werden die theoretischen Inhalte praktisch erprobt und eingeübt.

In Hinblick auf mögliche Online-Tutorien oder Hybridformate wird zusätzlich auf folgende Fragen eingegangen:
• Wie organisiere ich Online-Veranstaltungen auf den im FB 7 üblichen Plattformen, wie Zoom und StudIP?
• Wie lassen sich kleine und größere Gruppen in digitalen Formaten aktivieren?
• Welche Formen der Kooperation sind für welche Inhalte und Veranstaltungsformate sinnvoll, z.B. Lerntandems, Arbeitsgruppen?
• Wie lassen sich Inhalte online gut vermitteln? Welche einfachen technischen Möglichkeiten gibt es dafür und wie lassen sie sich ideal einsetzen?

This course offers a hands-on approach to programming in a matrix-based programming language.
Participants may chose whether to use Matlab or GNU Octave as a working environment, as the fundamental syntax is identical in both programming languages.

Programming in Matlab or Octave has several advantages widely recognized in academic and industrial fields of application.
The following aspects will be covered in the course:

• Matlab or Octave as high-level programming languages are easy-to-use thanks to an interactive programming environment (allowing for both command-line and GUI-based programming).
• Fundamental aspects of programming, including the use of scripts, functions, control structures,.., but also the "traps" to be considered when using a numeric approach to problem solving will be discussed.
• Matlab or Octave are "MATrix LABoratories", where performing mathematical operations is easy when the concept of matrix calculations is applied. You will learn how to use this for the efficient analysis of data and how to avoid writing long code.
• Solutions for almost any mathematical problem are available as functions and can be customized for individual use. In this introductory course, one focus is to properly use such functions based on examples and explanations provided in the software documentation.
• There is a variety of options to analyze and visualize data, which will be introduced in order to obtain a template to be used in one's proper study or research project.

The course will combine seminaristic online classes - which leave enough time for coding introductory examples together with the lecturer - with practical sessions, where the aspects above can be applied in exercises and small application projects.
Feedback sessions will allow to answer individual questions, e.g. on the analysis of one's proper data set or the use of specific toolboxes.

"Python is an easy to learn, powerful programming language. It has efficient high-level data structures and a simple but effective approach to object-oriented programming." (https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/)
This course offers an introduction into programming with Python. Participants will learn the basic Python syntax, how to use the Python interpreter, implement various data structures, handle in- and output as well as exceptions in Python. Moreover the course will cover the installation and use of selected third-party packages and management of different Python environments.
The course aims at a practical introduction to Python. Theoretical sessions and lectures will be followed up by practical exercise sessions.

Whether it is coping with ‘Peak Oil’, meeting the challenge of climate change, helping farmers in poorer countries through fair trade, or finding ways to keep discarded products out of the landfills, sustainability issues are the biggest challenges facing businesses. The course shows how the complexities of sustainability issues can be integrated into marketing. The systematic, step-by-step approach of sustainability marketing involves: an analysis of socio-ecological priorities to complement conventional consumer and market research; an integration of ethical values into marketing strategy; the development of sustainability marketing strategies; a new consumer-oriented sustainability marketing mix of the ‘4 Cs’ (Customer Solutions, Communications, Customer Cost, Convenience) to replace the outmoded and producer-oriented ‘4 Ps’; and finally an analysis how innovation and marketing can go beyond responding to social change to contribute to a transformation to a more sustainable society. The course is ideally suited to both students and practitioners at many different levels and disciplines, including marketing, innovation, CSR, sustainability and environmental management.

The lecture “World in Transition” is offered by members of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). The WBGU is an independent, scientific advisory body to the German federal government. Its principal tasks are to analyse global environment and development problems and to elaborate recommendations for action and research. In this lecture, the WBGU presents its flagship report “World in Transition – A Social Contract for Sustainability”. The lecture starts with an interview providing a comprehensive overview of the global transformation towards a low-carbon society. Subsequent lectures highlight the characteristics of the so-called »anthropocene«, including the main impacts of climate change. A detailed view on concepts of transformation is presented and aspects of technical and economic feasibility are adressed in detail. The role of the state and change agents in the transformation process are also examined. Finally, you will become familiar with some instruments and measures that can advance the great transformation towards sustainability. A special lecture focuses on the role of scientific advice in policy making and explains the functioning of the WBGU and how it produces scientific policy advice.

This seminar provides you with all the important information to find your job in Germany. You will learn how to successfully prepare your application for the German job market and receive many tips that you need for the job interview. You will learn how to deal with stressful questions and can actively practise the job interview in a roleplay. You will also receive information about German business etiquette and corporate culture.

Whether it is coping with ‘Peak Oil’, meeting the challenge of climate change, helping farmers in poorer countries through fair trade, or finding ways to keep discarded products out of the landfills, sustainability issues are the biggest challenges facing businesses. The course shows how the complexities of sustainability issues can be integrated into marketing. The systematic, step-by-step approach of sustainability marketing involves: an analysis of socio-ecological priorities to complement conventional consumer and market research; an integration of ethical values into marketing strategy; the development of sustainability marketing strategies; a new consumer-oriented sustainability marketing mix of the ‘4 Cs’ (Customer Solutions, Communications, Customer Cost, Convenience) to replace the outmoded and producer-oriented ‘4 Ps’; and finally an analysis how innovation and marketing can go beyond responding to social change to contribute to a transformation to a more sustainable society. The course is ideally suited to both students and practitioners at many different levels and disciplines, including marketing, innovation, CSR, sustainability and environmental management.
