Masha Bratishcheva (Universität Bielefeld) From Siberia to Zurich to elsewhere: First women doctors in European universities

In December 1867, Nadezhda Suslova defended her dissertation at the University of Zurich and became the first woman from the Russian Empire to earn a medical degree. The daughter of a former serf, she had begun her training in St. Petersburg in 1859, when Russian universities briefly admitted women as auditors, and had crossed into Switzerland after the 1863 charter closed those doors. By the summer of 1873, ninety-nine women from the empire were enrolled at the same university, the great majority of them in the faculty of medicine, many of them Jewish, Polish, or Finnish subjects for whom Zurich was professionally more accessible than any institution at home.

This lecture follows the first generation of women physicians through their European training and into the careers it made possible: Fanny Berlinerblau becoming chief surgeon at the New England Hospital, Raisa Putiata opening a clinic in Salzburg as the first woman authorised to practice in Austria, Adelaida Lukanina admitted to Russian practice only during the 1892 cholera epidemic. It also traces what the autocratic state did to keep these women from practicing at home: the imperial decree of May 1873 that ordered them back, the secret blacklist of forty-five names that followed, and the question the decree forced on every woman it named, whether to obtain a European diploma was to obtain the right to use it.
