Prof. Dr. Torben Klarl, Volkswirtschaftslehre, insb. Makroökonomik

How do authoritarian political institutions influence the ability of a society to innovate? The existing literature identifies a mostly negative effect of autocracy on innovation. However, in recent years a new type of so-called ``informational autocracies'' has emerged, which distinguishes themselves by the sophisticated control of information, rather than outright repression. Some informational autocracies -- such as China -- also have highly advanced research sectors that compete at the frontier of global knowledge creation, in particular concerning new technologies such as artificial intelligence. In this talk, I present a dynamic political economy model to investigate how authoritarian political institutions affect technological innovation in informational autocracies.
