Dr. Solvejg Wolfers-Pomerenke, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg

In her presentation Solvejg Wolfers-Pommerenke critically reflects on the methodological implications and challenges of indexing gender and sexuality by research participants when conducting ethnographic fieldwork in explicitly gendered contexts, where notions of hegemonic masculinity are prevalent. Drawing on over 60 hours of audio-recorded and observed interactions among male professional and elite football players and coaches before, during and after football matches and trainings, she critically discusses the kinds of gendered and sexualised identities participants regularly assign to the female* researcher. Discursive examples of heterosexist interactions will be presented and possible reactions discussed. Ultimately, Solvejg argues that in ethnographic research projects, the construction of gender and sexual identities is potentially always relevant to data collection and research outcome calling for more reflexivity from (male) colleagues in the field.

Solvejg Wolfers-Pomerenke is a postdoctoral research associate at the Institute of English Studies at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Her research interests include team cohesion, identity construction, gender, leadership discourse, and the multiple uses and functions of humour.
