Exploiting water isotopes for an improved understanding of climate changes

The water cycle is an essential element of the Earth's climate, and the interactions between the water cycle and other components of the climate system are manifold. In climate research, particular attention is paid to its isotopic signature, and stable water isotopologues are among the key proxy data recorded and measured in numerous paleoclimate archives, e.g. ice cores, marine sediments and speleothems. Such isotopic datasets allow us to study climate variations on a wide range of time scales, from short-term extreme events to glacial-interglacial climate variability. In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to the current state of water isotope research. In addition, I will use recent research studies from Antarctica, the Atlantic Ocean and other regions to demonstrate how a combination of different instrumental isotope datasets and simulations with isotope-enabled Earth system models allows for an improved understanding of past and present climate change.
