Microbial electrochemical technologies – from energy-efficient waste water treatment to biomining on Mars

Veranstaltungsort: Online
Beginn: 26. Juni 2024, 13:30 Uhr
Ende: 26. Juni 2024, 15:00 Uhr
Guest: Sven Kerzenmacher

Prof. Dr.-Ing habil., Research Group Environmental Process Engineering
Speaker of the Center for Environmental Research and Sustainable Technology (UFT)
University of Bremen, Germany

Microbial Electrochemical Technologies (METs) offer an intriguing method for linking microbial metabolism with the production or consumption of electricity. Although this technology's roots extend back over a century, significant advancements and interest have emerged primarily in the past twenty years. This presentation will begin with the basic principles and then explore practical applications, including generating electricity from wastewater and innovative approaches to producing animal feed and value-added products from electricity and CO2. Lastly, we will discuss the potential of these technologies for use in space exploration missions.

Sven Kerzenmacher studied process and environmental engineering and holds a Master’s Degree in Energy Conversion & Management. During his studies, he became fascinated by electrochemical energy conversion, leading him to pursue PhD research on implantable biofuel cells at the Department of Microsystems Engineering – IMTEK at the University of Freiburg. He subsequently established his independent research group on Bioelectrochemical Systems and completed his habilitation in Microsystems Engineering at the same university. Since 2018, he has been a professor at the University of Bremen and heads the Environmental Process Engineering research group. With his interdisciplinary team, he focuses on applied and fundamental research in microbial electrochemical technologies for energy conversion, bioproduction, and bioremediation. Prof. Kerzenmacher is currently the speaker for the University’s Center for Environmental Research and Sustainable Technology (UFT), a member of the steering committee of the Bremen Research Centre for Energy Systems (BEST), and a member of the MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes at the University of Bremen.

Bremen Human Space Exploration Seminar

The seminar takes place one Wednesday of the month at 13:30 CET/CEST online via zoom and consists of a 40-minute talk followed by a 40-minute discussion.

The zoom link for the meeting will be send via email to all registered members of the space-exploration mailing list. You can register here.
