ABOUT THE DATA SNACKS

Ensuring the responsible handling of research data in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) is a crucial aspect of the research process. In fact, the adoption of a sustainable data management strategy has become essential for the success of third-party funding proposals (e.g. requirements of the DFG).

With the Data Snacks, we invite you to a culinary data break served in four short sessions to share our love for research data. The menu revolves around different challenges in data management. Embark on a delightful journey with us, exploring FAIR data in digital humanities, uncovering the secrets of the Nagoya Protocol, indulging in data licences, and venturing into the realm of data publishing.

WHAT’S THIS SESSION ABOUT?

This session focuses on the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in coding workflows, but many of the insights are valuable for anyone interested in using LLMs in scientific research.

Whether you're just starting out or already comfortable writing code, LLMs can assist with generating, debugging, and improving code. But using them effectively requires more than just copying suggestions. In this DataSnack, Annika helps to unpack how these models work, where they excel, where caution is needed – and why LLMs are fundamentally changing scientific programming across disciplines. She will offer a practical look at what LLMs can (and can't) do, how to craft better prompts for coding support, and what it means to use them responsibly in research. More snack-sized insights for big AI questions include choosing the right model or feature, and ensuring data security and privacy.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Annika Nolte is a data scientist for training and consulting at the DSC. She holds a master's degree in Environmental Sciences from the Technical University of Braunschweig (2019). She has over five years of experience in scientific programming, with a focus on data management and processing, hydroinformatics, geospatial analysis, and the application of AI in environmental modeling. In training and consulting, Annika draws on her research background and broad interdisciplinary expertise in Earth system sciences.

WHERE AND WHEN?

The info event will take place from 1:00 to 1:30pm via Zoom. There will be a 15-20 minute presentation followed by an open forum for questions and discussion. We look forward to exciting discussions!
