Exploring the lunar water cycle

Beginn: 13. November 2025, 14:00 Uhr
Ende: 13. November 2025, 15:00 Uhr
Bremen Human Space Exploration Seminar
Guest: Prof. Dr. Philipp Reiss

Evidence for the existence of water on the Moon has been delivered in recent decades through various missions and sample analysis. However, the formation and distribution of water in the lunar environment and the processes driving the so-called water cycle are still poorly understood. The biggest challenge is that, so far, no actual ground truth exists. In this talk, I will summarise the state of knowledge and present our own research and instrument contributions to upcoming missions that will explore and analyse lunar water in situ.

Philipp Reiss is Professor of Lunar and Planetary Exploration at the Technical University of Munich. He studied aerospace engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Bremen and TUM. In 2018, he completed his doctorate there in the field of lunar exploration and continued to lead the associated research group as a postdoc. Prior to his current position, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the European Space Agency (ESA-ESTEC), where he supported the development of scientific instruments for lunar missions. https://www.linkedin.com/in/philippreiss/
