The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen invites application (under the condition of job release) for

One 4-year Ph.D. position (f/m/d) in:

Raytrace modeling of the line of sight for GNSS applications

Salary is according to the German federal employee scale TVL-13 (75%) and this position is limited to a term of 48 months.

The time limitation is subject to the scientific qualification according to the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 (1) (WissZeitVG - Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz). Therefore, candidates may only be considered if they dispose of the respective scope of qualification periods according to §2 (1) WissZeitVG.

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The project is part of the DFG research unit 'ClockMetrology', which aims to characterize the delay time from a GNSS satellite transmitter to the receiving station with unprecedented accuracy. High accuracy is needed to use the GNSS satellite network for he synchronization of atomic clocks at different station around the world.

In this sub-project the atmospheric part of the signal path is investigated in detail. For this a combination of atmospheric measurements and ray-trace modeling is used. The successful candidate will create or modify a ray-tracing model to incorporate measurements and perform measurements of atmospheric constituents along the line of sight at the Observatorium Wettzell, Bavaria, Germany. The ray-trace modeling is investigated in cooperation with the DGFI-TUM (Technical University Munich). The performance of the modeled system will be evaluated at the Observatorium Wettzell, which is a fiducial station for geodaetic observations.

  • M.Sc. degree or equivalent in physics, geophysics, mathematics or related fields with a grade point average better than B (English grade) or 2.0 (German grade).
  • Very good knowledge of the English and German languages in writing and speaking (if German is not your mother tongue, please provide proof of at least level B1).
  • Skills in scientific computer programming (e.g., Python, Fortran, C, Matlab or similar) and a strong interest to work in the field of ground-based remote sensing of the atmosphere or GNSS techniques.
  • The successful candidate is required to work in a team and to travel
    • to the TUM, Munich, to incorporate the ionospheric model into the ray-trace software and
    • to the Observatorium Wettzell for a prolonged stay in order order to perform measurements.
  • Good communication skills as cooperation with various national and international partners are required

Allgemeine Hinweise

The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) provides a stimulating, international, and pleasant work environment and is strongly involved in the international climate and space science community. The focus of our work in environmental physics is the investigation of the atmosphere, the cryosphere, and the oceans of the earth. We have state-of-the art lab equipment, and high computational capacity, which is essential for the data processing of our projects. Many of our scientific projects are using external platforms like the research vessel "Polarstern", aircrafts, stratospheric balloons, and ground based stations all around the world, from the tropics to the poles.

The university is family-friendly, diverse and sees itself as an international university. We therefore welcome all applicants regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. Disabled applicants will be given priority if their professional and personal qualifications are essentially the same.

The application deadline isMarch 1st 2023. The application should include details of relevant qualifications and experience, CV, copies of transcripts, and names of at least two referees.

Please send your application (cover letter, CV, and copy of your degree certificates including high school) and preferably contact details of two references with the
