Bacherlorarbeit: Membrane Selection for a Microbial Electrolysis Cell for Brewery Wastewater Treatment

Recovery of energy from waste has got increasing attention due to environmental concerns. This includes the recovery from remaining energy from brewery wastewater streams as they contain high loads of dissolved organic matter that usually are lost in the process of water clarification.

With regard of recovering these value-added compounds, the department of environmental process engineering is working on the development of microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) at a scale of commercial interest. However, the building parts of these devices have proven to be the limiting criterion for further development and widespread of these technologies.

While state-of-the-art materials could possibly help achieving the purpose, there are other materials which have not been tested for use in MEC, at low pH gradients. Therefore, we are on the search of an interested student to complete the task while deepening their understanding on bioelectrochemical systems (BES) under the framework described below.
