The University of Bremen encompasses the entire production chain of engineering sciences, from material synthesis, through all subsequent processing and machining technologies, up to material characterization, including material modelling and process modelling as well as system integration. The research focusses on a broad range of materials such as metals, ceramics, hybrid materials, nanomaterials, and semiconductors. Besides the classical technologies manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, and process engineering, photonics and energy-related technologies play a major role.
The strong cooperation between the faculties for natural and engineering sciences as well as mathematics at the University and the external research institutes as well as with international partners characterizes the high-profile area. Three Collaborative Research Centers (Sonderforschungsbereiche) manifest the excellent research within the high-profile area. Further results of the close collaborations comprise three Research Units (Forschergruppen), one Priority Programs (Schwerpunktprogramme) and three Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg).
