The aim of this sub-project within the large-scale research project "hyBit - Hydrogen for Bremen's industrial Transformation"  is the further development of microbial electrolysis cells for hydrogen production from wastewater and biogenic residues. In order to increase performance, the patented concept of the filtering microbial anode is being pursued, in which the filtration-active layer of a membrane filter for wastewater treatment simultaneously serves as the anode of the microbial electrolysis cell. In addition to the identification of suitable municipal and industrial wastewater streams, the work also includes the operation of a 5-L scale laboratory reactor with real wastewater and the in-depth characterization and evaluation of the concept.
