How about Leipzig?

Skyline von Leipzig

Unlike in previous years, we are planning our September excursion not to Berlin but to Leipzig (27.09-28.09), with an exclusive programme co-organised by local alumni. Thanks to a prospective grant of 100 euros per participant from the RDG Foundation, we will be able to keep the costs per person at 100-150 euros. Further information and a form for submitting expressions of interest can be found here.

Our preliminary programme proposal looks like this:

Rahn Education, headquartered in Leipzig, is the largest provider of independent schools in Germany. Following a humanities-orientated programme, around 1,000 employees attend to more than 8,000 learners, from kindergarten to secondary schools to preparatory colleges – now at 40 locations in four countries. Our alumnus Gotthard Dittrich is the group’s sole and long-standing managing director. We will have the opportunity to talk with him after touring the campus.

The GRASSI Museum of Ethnology has one of the largest ethnographic collections in Germany, with around 200,000 objects from Africa, Southeast Asia and South Asia. We will receive our own guided tour and then have the opportunity to engage in a discussion with our alumnus Dr Ohiniko Mawussé Toffa, who worked at the GRASSI for many years and is one of the leading experts on the restitution of cultural property.

We're also planning a tour of the city and dinner together.

Here’s what our tentative travel plan looks like:

  • Departure on Deutsche Bahn from Bremen HBF on Friday morning, 27 September, probably at 8:09, arrival in Leipzig at 13:21. Return journey on Saturday afternoon, 28 September, from Leipzig at 15:42, arriving Bremen HBF at 20:27.
  • For accommodations, we will suggest hotels at different price points (probably between 70 and 120 euros). Rooms are to be booked and paid for by the participants themselves. All other expenses are also to be borne directly by the participants.
  • The alumni association will handle the Deutsche Bahn booking for the group as well as all of the content-related preparations.
  • Thanks to a prospective generous grant of 100 euros per person from the Rahn Dittrich Group's European Foundation for Education and Culture (www.rdg-stiftung.eu), we are able to cover the cost of the train journey (approx. 75-80 euros) as well as a proportionate amount for catering.

If this excursion has caught your fancy, you can register your interest here. We will do the trip if at least 20 people register, up to a maximum of 35 participants.
