House Typeface

House Typeface

Sharp Sans is the house typeface of the University of Bremen.

It is a pleasant yet matter-of-fact typeface that allows complete freedom when designing professional offline and online media. Eight fonts have been licensed for the university and are available for all staff members to use.

The Sharp Sans typeface is to be especially used for marketing and communication media. The Arial system font can continue to be used for general office communication.

Please only use Sharp Sans or Arial for any communication.

Font Styles

For headlines and continuous text, Sharp Sans Medium is used and is thus the standard typeface for all media at the University of Bremen. For subheadlines and emphasis, Sharp Sans Bold is used. Sharp Sans Book and Sharp Sans Semibold are alternative styles that are only used in particularly small or large formats. All italic styles should only be used for the additional language in bilingual media.

Targeted text sections, such as introductions or sub-headlines, can be set in colored font as a means of creating color accents. Good readability and clear color contrasts should be ensured.

Tracking

Sharp Sans is generally to be used with a tracking of at least 20 units (to be set in InDesign). Up to 40 tracking units (InDesign) can be set for headlines, introductions, and larger font applications.

Accessibility

Good readability should be ensured for the best level of accessibility in communication. This means there should be short and clear texts, as well as a concise structure, and clear ordering of the contents. The font size of continuous text and headlines should differ greatly. Texts should be set flush to the left and not justified. Good color contrast must be given when text is colored. The following examples of color combinations from the color palette of the University of Bremen (see section colors) offer enough color contrast.
