Fucus vesiculosus on rocky coasts on Helgoland
Fucus vesiculosus grows on rocky coasts like here on Helgoland. The cell wall sugar fucoidan is particularly important for resisting waves and tides.

Glycobiochemistry

The Carbon Sequestration & Glycobiochemistry Research Group, led by Prof. Dr. Jan-Hendrik Hehemann, investigates the role of algal polysaccharides in the marine carbon cycle. The research group is based in Department 2 and at MARUM.

The Glycobiochemistry research group contributes to teaching in the international degree programs BSc Marine Geosciences, MSc Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSc BMB) at the University of Bremen, and MSc Marine Microbiology (MarMic) at the Max Planck Institute in Bremen.
