Institute for electrical Drives, Power Electronics and Devices

Modern electrical drive and energy techniques are increasingly dominated by the combination of electrical drives, power electronics and control. This comprehensive system approach is the most important part of mechatronics. It is the premise for the development of new electrical drives with better dynamics, precision and power density. They are required in trains, electrical cars, machines, plants and medical devices. Because an industrial nation uses more than half of its electrical energy to transform it into mechanical energy by electrical drives, the importance of this field of research is obvious.

Power electronics and the automatic control are important in decentralised generation of electric power by innovative wind power plants, photovoltaic or in the use of fuel cells in future. By looking at the constant decreasing of our global resources and the dedicated goal to reduce CO2-emission sustainably, the best power efficiency needs to be developed in energy plants and electrical drives.
