Institute of Geography
Geography – intra-disciplinary interdisciplinary!
Geography combines perspectives from the natural and social sciences and examines the diverse interactions between people, the environment, and space. Especially in a time of profound societal and Earth system changes, geography enables us to reveal complex interrelationships, foster dialogue between different perspectives, and understand spatial processes in terms of their interconnections and dynamics.
Geography – Building bridges!
This bridging role defines the work of our institute. We work at various scales and have a wide range of regional areas of focus. Engaging with different spatial contexts opens up opportunities for comparative perspectives and sharpens our understanding of the complexity of the relationships between society, space, and the environment.
Geography – learning, researching, and supporting!
We are particularly committed to supporting students and researchers in the early stages of their careers. Through intensive mentoring, close collaboration, and a commitment to structured doctoral training, we create a stimulating environment for scholarly learning, research, and critical thinking: we view the support of emerging scholars as a central component of our academic culture.
Geography – sustainable and transformative!
A common focus of our research is on issues of sustainability. We are less interested in simple answers than in examining different interests, conflicting goals, and spatial impacts. Geography offers unique opportunities to integrate Earth system, economic, political, and cultural dimensions and to analytically explore the complexity of current challenges.
