One of the best ways to explain science is through the use of video. All you need is a good idea and the smartphone in your pocket! This workshop will introduce you to the basics of scientific video storytelling and take you through the technical steps to produce short videos. You’ll learn how videos for science can be shot with apps and how they can be published online. During the workshop you will develop your own storyboard and put together a short film. In short, learn how to make the most of your smartphone for content production with this practical bootcamp.

What to bring

Please bring your own smartphone or tablet (Android or iOS) and if available your headset. To get the most out of this session, please have the following apps installed on your phone:

• Android-Phones: Kinemaster, Open Camera, Quick


The training will focus on the latest tools and techniques with an emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. The workshop includes practical exercises and group discussion, and participants will leave inspired and equipped with the fundamental skills needed to start creating quality content using their mobiles. Each participant will receive a detailed handout with course information and additional resources.

Workshop Trainer

Matthias Süßen is a freelance journalist, blogger and trainer based in Kiel, Germany. He is specialised in mobile journalism and science communication. The emphasis is on storytelling, filming and editing. Matthias works worldwide as a MoJo and Science Communication trainer and has been teaching courses in Armenia, Germany, Canada, Italy, Hong Kong, Fiji and the United Kingdom.
