Sophia Hunger has been Professor of Computational Social Sciences at the University of Bremen since May 2023. Prior to that, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Civil Society Research at the WZB Berlin, where she is still associated as a visiting researcher. In 2020 she received her PhD from the European University Institute.

Her research focuses on protest movements, political participation, party competition, political communication and applied quantitative methods, in particular quantitative text analysis and automated event extraction. Her major methodological endeavour is currently the automation of protest event analysis using computational methods to investigate how protest shapes and influences modern societies. She is also interested in developing new methods to measure positions, polarisation and resonance in political communication and public debates.

Sophia Hunger's work has been published in Political Science Research and Methods, European Political Science Review, Swiss Political Science Review, Forschungsjournal Soziale Bewegungen and Zeitschrift für Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft. She participates in public debates on protest and electoral behaviour and has written expert opinions for ARD, ZDF, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Deutschlandfunk, Berliner Tagesspiegel, France24, El País, NDR and rbb, among others.
