The Summer School aims to counteract existing gender inequalities in academia. Studies have shown that women continue to be underrepresented in the field of data science. This imbalance is particularly pronounced in the field of computer-based methods in the social sciences.
The “Summer School for Women in Political Methodology” offers training and mentoring, with a particular focus on female political and social scientists in the early stages of their careers. The event allows participants to acquire and develop skills in the application of computer-based methods. In addition, it supports women in building valuable contacts and networks in the science community. The Summer School is part of a long-term initiative aimed at advancing the education and careers of women in quantitative research in a sustainable manner.
This year, the Summer School takes place at the University of Bremen. The seven-day program includes training in various computer-based methods, such as web scraping and large language models (LLMs). Also on the agenda is a supervised hackathon, which will allow participants to work on their own projects. The Summer School is organised and taught by established experts from the field of social and political sciences. It thus offers a supportive and cooperative learning environment that promotes networking between emerging and established female researchers.
In addition, participants are recruited internationally and represent a range of European universities. Consequently, the summer school also promotes international exchange and cooperation.
