At DHd2026 conference in Vienna, Nele Fuchs and Annika Nolte led a hands-on workshop on automated audio transcription with Whisper. The session highlights how the DSC supports practical data skills in the Digital Humanities as part of its DataNord-project.

The study aims to assess multilingualism at two Japanese universities using the methodology of Linguistic Landscapes. The goal of the project is to reveal the subtle presence of minoritized languages in a largely monolingual society historically characterized by linguistic uniformity.

The Data Competence Center DataNord is once again awarding the Data Champion Award – endowed with 1,500 EUR. The award recognizes innovative achievements in research data management, with particular emphasis on the FAIR principles. Apply or nominate a candidate by February 15!

In the research seminar of the Didactics of Mathematics group, Annika Nolte and Nele Fuchs demonstrated how audio data can be automatically transcribed using the right tools – including a tailored solution for handling mathematical formulas.

In January 2025, the DSC contributed its DataNord expertise to the YUFE Open Science Program. Dr. Susanne de Vogel gave a presentation on the services offered by the DSC, followed by an interactive workshop on FAIR and open data.

At the 39th Chaos Communication Congress, the DSC once again contributed perspectives from research data management (RDM) and data literacy to the tech community. DataNord data scientist Sarah Büker highlighted why RDM is not only a technical challenge, but also a social and inclusion-related one.

As part of the DataNord project, the Data Science Center (DSC) contributed to this year’s WiNoDa Winter School: Sarah Büker led a hands-on workshop on the Galaxy platform, thereby strengthening collaboration between the two data competence centers.

Researchers in the interdisciplinary network AI meets Qualitative Methods (AIQM) are exploring the use of AI in qualitative research. In the framework of our DataNord project, the DSC contributes its expertise to the network – through impulses by Nele Fuchs, data scientist for Digital Humanities.

DataNord coordinators Tanja Hörner and Lena Steinmann presented the project at this year’s NFDI4DataScience Conference in Berlin, helping to deepen the collaboration between Data Competency Centers and the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI).

Research with large datasets is becoming increasingly relevant across various academic disciplines. In a position paper, 40 researchers from 21 German and Austrian research institutes are calling for greater political and academic engagement in digital and data sciences.
