This year's INFORMATIK festival took place in Potsdam under the motto “The Wide Open: Openness from Source to Science.” This time, the thematic focus was centred on exploring open access and processes within an increasingly digital and interconnected world. The conference offered a broad program covering a variety of topics such as data science, artificial intelligence, green coding, software engineering, research data, and data literacy.
The program also included the Data Science Community Workshop “Current Developments and Perspectives (at Universities) in the Field of Data Science,” which was held for the third time already. The event was co-organized by the Data Science Center (Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler & Dr. Lena Steinmann) and the Digital Science Center of Kiel University (Prof. Dr. Dirk Nowotka & Dr. Helen Pfuhl).
The workshop aims to bring together members from a wide range of data science initiatives to further promote interregional networking and collaboratively develop relevant focus areas and perspectives for the community. By facilitating exchange around current challenges, best practices, strategic approaches, and potential for future collaborations, the workshop fosters the sustainable development of the community.
The event's program included several talks from members of the data science community as well as a poster session. Part of the latter was the contribution “Training, Consultation, and More – Services from the Data Science Center,” which was presented by DSC data scientist Dr. Maryam Movahedifar. Here you can find the responding publication - Movahedifar et al. (2025). In addition, this year's workshop also included the introduction of the first position paper developed by the data science community. The event concluded with the establishment of the Data & Digital Science Community association (DaDiSC) whose executive board team includes Prof. Dr. Dirk Nowotka (University of Kiel), Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler (University of Bremen), and Dr. Martin Semmann (University of Hamburg).
More information about the INFORMATIK festival 2025 and the DSC’s contribution can be found in the digitally published conference proceedings. The next INFORMATIK will take place in September 2026 at TU Dresden. More information on the event is available here.
