Sustainability is at the heart of learning and teaching at the University of Bremen: This involves, on the one hand, taking a scientific approach to the issue of sustainability with numerous projects and, on the other hand, constantly reviewing the university’s own actions to ensure that they are in line with environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Virtual Academy of Sustainability
The Virtual Academy of Sustainability provides fundamental knowledge on sustainability. Openly accessible to all, the academy offers learning videos from a variety of disciplines, from the fields of communication studies to economics to psychology. The courses are on the OnCourse virtual platform and consist mainly of learning videos.

Environment- and Sustainability-Related Courses
All disciplines at the University of Bremen regularly offer courses related to environmental and sustainability issues. You can find a list of these on the Environmental Management website. Enrollment in these seminars and lectures can be done via Stud.IP.

The Continuing Education Program “Fit in STEM: Environment – Energy – Sustainability”
With the “Fit in STEM” model project, the Academy of Continuing Education has laid the cornerstone for persons re-entering the workforce after taking parental leave or being unemployed. Due to the great demand, this offer will be continued in the future. The Academy of Continuing Education offers not only the Environment – Energy – Sustainability program, but also other programs that contribute to achieving these goals, one of them being the “Software Development and Software Engineering” program, which is aimed specifically at persons with a migratory background.

Bachelor: Natural Science of Sustainability
The sustainable use of resources and energy as well as the recording and description of processes and interactions in environmental systems from the disciplines of biology, physics and geology are the subject of this degree program. The first two years of the program provide a comprehensive, solution-oriented basic education. Students deal with the topics of resources, the water cycle, energy, climate change and biodiversity. This is followed by individual specialisation with the choice of a focus area.

Master: The Economics of Global Challenges
As a consecutive study program, the Master's program The Economics of Global Challenges builds on a completed Bachelor's degree in economics or a related field. Upon completion of the Master's degree, students can enter the profession directly or deepen the economic knowledge acquired up to the Master's degree as part of a doctoral program.

Joint Bachelor in Urban Sustainability Studies (YUFE)
The degree program aims to prepare tomorrow's leaders to advance sustainable urban development across Europe, thereby addressing pressing environmental challenges facing both urban and rural areas. The Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) alliance is offering this joint bachelor's degree in Urban Sustainability Studies starting in the 2025/26 academic year. The program will be taught at ten European universities, including the University of Bremen.
