In accordance with our guiding principle of social responsibility, we are committed to facilitating knowledge and technology transfer to help our global society to become more sustainable.
Collaborative Knowledge Exchange
At the University of Bremen, we define knowledge transfer as a large-scale, research-based communication process. This encompasses cooperation and dialogue between researchers and all sectors of society. The University of Bremen maintains continuous communication with social, cultural, educational, political, and economic figures on a regional, national, and international level.
Our comprehensive understanding of our role enables us as a university to address the challenges of and actively search for solutions in the sustainability transformation.
Examples of Our Outreach Activities
Community
The event series “Focus on the Sea – MARUM in Dialogue” invites the public to discuss current sustainability topics. Representatives from politics, administration, economics, non-profit organizations, and the community engage in an open dialogue with MARUM researchers.

Innovation Lab
The MATENA innovate! Center is an affiliated institute of the University of Bremen that uses research results and technological developments to create marketable products and services. The innovation lab works closely with industrial partners. Due to its legal form, it is able to significantly shorten practical implementation processes of innovations.

Startups
The University of Bremen has a proven track record of fostering innovation, consistently generating new startups. One notable example of this is Heatrix. This Bremen startup is developing sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels for use in energy-intensive industrial settings.

Networking
Transformation requires cooperation. This is why the University of Bremen strategically creates local, national, and international networks that support sustainable research and make solutions practicable. We are a proud to be a member of the Bremen Research and Technology Center ECOMAT. We contribute our expertise to the Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung as well as the German Society for Sustainability at Higher Education Institutions (DG HochN). The University of Bremen also participates internationally in the International Universities Climate Alliance.
