Seminar

Termine:
wöchentlich Di 16:00 - 18:00 Externer Ort: ZMT (Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research, Fahrenheitstr. 6) (2 SWS)

This seminar tackles the urgency of climate action from a fresh perspective. Starting from recent response options released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, it pro-vides lessons learned from policy analysis and it invites you looking forward. Together, we will enable learning about evidence, analytical tools, principles, and perspectives for strate-gies. Integrating climate policy (SDG13) with a range of SDGs (e.g. SDG 2, 6, 7, 12, 14) is seen as pivotal to overcome narrow responses and engage actors. This is embedded in a global governance approach that seeks to balance the need for multilateral agreements with the opportunities of bottom-up multi-stakeholder approaches with regional clubs. It is thus system thinking and transformations driven by new alliances that are considered key to future skillsets for a next generation of leaders (i.e. You!).

Invited readings:
1) What is climate change. A really simple guide provided by BBC here
2) IPCC WG III: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, THE international scien-tific body dealing with the issue, has been providing tangible response options in 2022 for policy makers here
3) Chatham House, the No 1 world’s policy think tank, provides a range of analyses on the topic here
4) Youth in Action, voices from all over the world hosted by the UN here

Intended learning outcomes:
• Increase understanding of climate and natural resources for multiple policy streams, e.g. environment and development, livelihoods, economic growth
• Reflect on a sustainable development and concepts of prosperity & solidarity, cli-mate strategies, circular economy, and blue economy in terms of choices, trade-offs and side-effects
• Enhance knowledge in systems thinking, multi-level governance, Transition Man-agement
• Come to grips in policy-relevant methods of carbon accounting, footprint analysis, material flows, resource nexus, data mining, and extended cost-benefit analysis for purposes of policy analysis and integrated assessments of actors and their interests
• Learn about policy conclusions from case studies and formulation of policy recom-mendations and strategic pathways

Learning Approach:
Students‘ active participation both in preparatory readings and in classroom is considered essential; this is called ‘flipped learning’. Active engagement will be facilitated through P2P discussions and feedback, student-based presentations, and essays. This will require regular attendance and communication via StudIP.

Tentative Structure and Content:
1) Introduction: what is at stake
2) Climate policy: the long road to 1,5º
3) Climate policy: do countries deliver?
4) Climate and justice: the normative dimension
5) Interim conclusions on the role of policies
6) Theories: Global Governance, multi-level Governance, Transition Management
7) Case I: Energy transition, conflict minerals and new partnerships
8) Case II: A blue economy and the blue carbon game
9) Case III: A circular economy and decarbonization – opportunities with new alliances
10) Case IV: tbc
11) Principles for future strategies
12) Designing future Policy Pillars
13) The role of Business and civil society
14) Perspectives

Assessment:
The course offers two options: 3CP will be given for regular attendance and a presentation, preferably as part of a group presentation; 6CP will be given if an additional essay will be submitted.

“Gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality, and continues to be one of the most notable human rights violations within all societies. (…) Gender-based violence and violence against women are terms that are often used interchangeably as it has been widely acknowledged that most gender-based violence is inflicted on women and girls, by men. However, using the ‘gender-based’ aspect is important as it highlights the fact that many forms of violence against women are rooted in power inequalities between women and men.” (EIGE 2023)
In the seminar, we will discuss gender-based violence, focusing on violence against women and violence because of sexual orientation and gender identity. We will start by defining different forms and emanations of violence and analyzing how discrimination of women and violence against women has been codified by international organizations (e.g., United Nations, Council of Europe, European Union).

We will look at the prevalence of different forms of violence in Europe, consider their consequences, and examine how EU countries address gender-based violence through policies and politics. While doing so, the students will have a chance to acquaint themselves with different analytical perspectives and conceptual frameworks that can be applied to analyzing the above-mentioned issues. In the last part of the seminar, we will analyze the Baseline Evaluation Reports on the Implementation of the Istanbul Convention, prepared by GREVIO (the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence) for Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain, and discuss how different countries approach the issue of gender-based violence in terms of national politics and policies.

The seminar is organized in block meetings and will take place online via zoom.

Depending on their needs, individual students can earn 3 or 6 ECTS for the seminar. The course requirements will be adjusted accordingly.

08-26-M13.1-4Reproductive Rights in Europe (in englischer Sprache)

Blockveranstaltung

Fr 03.11.23 11:00 - 14:00 Online
Do 30.11.23 - Fr 01.12.23 (Do, Fr) 11:00 - 14:00 Online

“Reproductive rights refer to the composite of human rights that address matters of sexual and reproduc-tive health. Reproductive rights are protected through the application of human rights in guidelines, na-tional laws, constitutions, and regional and international treaties. (…) [They] consist of three broad catego-ries of rights: (1) rights to reproductive self-determination, (2) rights to sexual and reproductive health services, information, and education, and (3) rights to equality and nondiscrimination” (Erdman and Cook 2008).
Different aspects of reproductive rights are studied by political science, medicine, public health, law and (bio)ethics. Reproductive rights remain strongly contested, access to information and services continues to be restricted and individuals are “denied freedom to manage their lives” in many world regions (Kulczycki 2017), including a number of European countries. On the other hand, advances are made in response to cultural and societal changes. Moreover, developments in medical technology require continuous adjust-ments of the respective regulations, both at national and regional (e.g. EU) level.

In the seminar we will focus on sexual education and contraception, abortion, assisted reproduction tech-nologies (including surrogacy) and address the question of how reproductive rights are defined by law and exercised in practice in European countries. In particular, we will focus on the following issues:
1. regulatory frameworks and their practical implementation affecting, among other, the provision of sexual education, access to abortion, contraception, and assisted reproduction technologies.
2. cross-border mobility in pursuit of reproductive health needs: we will look at reproductive flows of individuals seeking abortion abroad, as well as those seeking access to medically assisted reproduction, including surrogacy.
3. reproductive justice: limitations that sexual minorities, individuals with different family status (singles and couples), and with different ethnic and racial background are facing while pursuing their reproductive rights.

Depending on their needs, individual students can earn 3 or 6 ECTS for the seminar. The course require-ments will be adjusted accordingly.

The seminar is organized in block meetings and will take place online via zoom.
