  • Development of Renewable Energies

Our research focuses on the development and design of pioneering Energy Systems that comply with the qualities of Sustainability and Resilience.

Research interests and activities

The Research Group Resilient Energy Systems investigates how energy systems can be transformed towards climate neutrality while remaining resilient, adaptable and socially viable. We study energy transitions as complex socio-technical processes in which technologies, infrastructures, institutions, markets and societal actors interact.

Our research focuses on transformative resilience: how energy systems can anticipate, withstand and adapt to disruptions and uncertainties while using transformation processes to create more sustainable and robust structures. A particular emphasis is placed on the governance of energy transitions and on understanding how different actors, institutions and levels interact in processes of transformation.

Our work combines energy-system modelling, data-driven analysis, scenario development and digital planning tools with approaches from the social sciences. We investigate technological and socio-economic pathways for the transformation of urban and industrial energy systems, including hydrogen-based industrial transformation and the transition towards sustainable heating. Urban and industrial digital twins, simulation and decision-support tools help us explore alternative pathways and make complex interdependencies accessible to decision-makers.

A further focus is on stakeholder processes, participation and knowledge transfer. Through workshops, participatory research and our Virtual Transformation Lab, we work together with actors from politics, industry, public administration and civil society to develop and test practical approaches to transformation. Our research therefore connects empirical analysis, modelling and tool development with real-world experimentation.

Current research includes projects on hydrogen-based industrial transformation, sustainable heating and neighbourhood energy systems, resilient energy infrastructures, digital transformation tools and participatory approaches to energy transitions. Through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration, we develop research-based approaches that support actors in navigating uncertainty and shaping sustainable energy transformations.
