Ahmed Elsayed is a researcher and Ph.D. candidate at the Institute for Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS) at the University of Bremen. He assumed various research roles at different research institutions, think tanks, and human rights organisations in Cairo, Berlin, and Washington D.C. His research foci are legitimacy, power, armed groups, democratisation, human rights, extremism and conflict transformation in the Middle East.

 

Ahmed Elsayed is the Press Emblem Campaign's 2011 award laureate and a DAAD Helmut-Schmidt-Program and Chevening Scholar. His articles on Middle Eastern and global politics have appeared on Arabic and international news and media platforms. His has a Master’s in Politics with distinction from the University of East Anglia, UK, and a Master’s in Public Policy from Hertie School, Germany.

Ahmed Elsayed is part of the research project "Politics of Legitimacy of Armed Groups", funded by the German Research Society (DFG), and led by Dr. Stephan Hensell and Prof. Klaus Schlichte. Previously, Ahmed took part in the Berghof Foundation's research project "Salafi-jihadi groups – (De)escalation trajectories and dialogue options", funded by the German Foundation for Peace Research (DSF).
