Information sheet on the Application for Acceptance as PhD Student (Dr. phil.) (Kopie 1)

According to § 11 of the doctoral regulations Dr. phil. from 29.05.2012 you can publish your dissertation in the following way:

1. Via a Publisher (Book, Journal, Book-On-Demand)

Please submit the following documents to the Central Examination Office as proof of publication:

  • a. certified copy of the publishing contract showing that your dissertation was published with a minimum circulation of 50 copies (minimum circulation is not required for Book-On-Demand publication).
  • b. four copies of the published dissertation (for explanation: three copies for SuUB, 1 copy for the Central Examination Office for the purpose of compliance with documentation requirements). In these 4 copies, the following notes are to be firmly included:
    • This publication was submitted to the PhD board Dr. phil. of the University of Bremen as a dissertation.
    • Evaluator: Prof. Dr.
    • Evaluator: Prof. Dr.
    • The colloquium took place on xxx.

It is also customary that the evaluators are each provided with a copy of the publication.

2. In Self-Printing

Please submit the following documents to the Central Examination Office as proof of publication:

  • one printed copy of the published dissertation.
    (for clarification, one copy for the Central Examination Office for the purpose of complying with documentation requirements. It is also customary to provide one copy of the publication to each of the evaluators).
  • Proof from the SuUB that a further 27 printed copies have been handed in at the SuUB exchange office.

3. Electronic Publication at SuUB

Please refer to SuUB information and documents for electronic publishing (www.suub.uni-bremen.de).
Please submit the following documents to the Central Examination Office as proof of publication:

  • one printed copy of the published dissertation.
    (for clarification: one copy for the Central Examination Office for the purpose of compliance with the documentation requirement. It is also customary that one copy of the publication is provided to each of the evaluators).
  • Proof to SuUB that the dissertation has been published electronically and one printed copy has been submitted to the SuUB exchange office.

Special Case: Cumulative Dissertation

If you have been awarded a doctorate with a cumulative dissertation and parts of your dissertation have already been published, please submit the following documents to the Central Examination Office as proof of publication:

  • a. one printed copy of the dissertation synopsis published via one of the above procedures (for clarification, one copy for the Central Examination Office for the purpose of compliance with documentation requirements. It is also customary for the evaluators to be provided with one copy of each publication).
  • b. Proof to SuUB that an additional seven copies of the complete dissertation (synopsis and previously published articles or individual papers) have been submitted to the SuUB exchange office.

Special Case: Changes in the Publication of the Dissertation

According to § 11 (2) the dissertation can be published in a revised or shortened version. The author and the chairperson of the examination committee or a member of the examination committee appointed by the chairperson must agree on the revision or shortening of the dissertation.
If the dissertation is published in a revised or abridged version, the publication must contain a note on the extent of the revision or abridgement.
A list of the revision or abridgement, together with the declaration of consent of the chairperson of the examination committee, is to be submitted to the office of Faculty 10.

Deadline for Publication

According to § 11 (3), the dissertation should be published within two years after the colloquium. Upon request, this deadline can be extended.
If the deadline is not met, all rights acquired through the PhD achievements expire.

Conditions for Publication

If the examination board has imposed publication requirements on you in the PhD student colloquium, the examination result of your colloquium will not be finally confirmed until the requirements have been fulfilled (§ 10 (2)). You have six months to fulfill the conditions. For the confirmation of the fulfillment of the conditions, please submit a printed revised copy of your dissertation and an informal letter from your supervisor confirming the fulfillment of the conditions.

Delivery of the Certificate and Use of the Doctoral Title

The degree certificate will be issued as soon as all proofs of publication have been submitted in full to the Central Examination Office and the degree certificate has been completed.

The doctoral title may only be used after receiving the doctoral certificate!
