Während seines Studiums erwarb Robert Porzel Abschlüsse in allgemeiner Linguistik, Computerlinguistik und Informatik. Vor seiner aktuellen Arbeit arbeitete er im interdisziplinären Sonderforschungsbereich "Sprache und Situation" (SFB 245) und dem Schwerpunktprogramm "Sprachproduktion" (SPP 1022) gefördert von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Danach arbeitete er am European Media Laboratory (EML) an mehreren Projekten zur Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache, z. B. DeepMap, Embassi, SmartKom und SmartWeb, die von der Klaus Tschira Foundation (KTS) und dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BmBF) finanziert wurden. Dazwischen war er Gastforscher an der University of California in Berkeley und arbeitete an einer Formalisierung von Konstruktionsgrammatik im EDU-Projekt. Nach seinem Wechsel an die Universität Bremen begann Robert Porzel im DFG- Sonderforschungsbereich "Selbststeuerung logistischer Prozesse" (SFB 637) mit der Arbeit an kontext-abhängiger Informationsverarbeitung für autonome kollaborative Systeme. Er initiierte und leitete die alle zwei Jahre stattfindende ScaNaLU-Workshopreihe zu skalierbaren Systemen zum Verständnis natürlicher Sprachen (2002, 2004 und 2006) und war Mitglied des Lenkungsausschusses des Interdisziplinären Kollegiums (IK) - einer internationalen Frühlingsschule für Kognitionswissenschaft, Neurowissenschaften und KI - die er 2010 zusammen mit Natalie Sebanz und Manfred Spitzer leitete. Derzeit ist er als Lektor in der Medieninformatik an der Universität Bremen tätig und forscht im Sonderforschungsbereich 1320 „Everyday Activity Science and Engineering“ an Wissensmodellen für kognitive Robotik.
